The Third Year

During the third year, the emphasis is on training residents to become managers and educators, rather than on the provision of direct patient care.   The third-year resident oversees and assists junior residents and students in the inpatient and outpatient settings, providing guidance and supervision.  Team management, in conjunction with the attending faculty, becomes a major role.

Third-year residents have ample opportunities for elective rotations in subspecialty areas of interest.  Throughout the residency program, house officers are given a chance to work with community agencies that provide services to children.  Residents also receive wide-ranging experience in developmental and behavioral pediatrics.  There is also special training in the evaluation and treatment of victims of child abuse.  Training in the Child Advocacy Center teaches residents about the management of abused children.  Off-site electives, including experiences abroad, are permitted during call-free rotations.  Research electives are encouraged.
