We have opportunities to gain input by empowering direct care nurses at the bedside. Our shared governance model engages direct care nurses and helps them achieve best practices. For example, we just elected our fourth co-chair nurse from the Operating Room, which instills the concept of shared governance into the unit.

Chief Nurse Executive, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Orlando, FL (Opening Fall 2012) Nemours Children’s Clinic – Florida Locations
I see my role as both leader and facilitator ‑ helping our nurses govern themselves and get what they need in order to provide the very best care for our patient-families. We want our nurses to know that they have a voice in our organization, and to give them every opportunity to advance professionally in pediatric nursing. I’m also very excited about our new hospital and the possibilities it offers for the future of nursing in Florida.

Our work aligns well with the goal of creating the best possible environment. There’s a clear link between Nursing Shared Governance and American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet® designation.

That which gets measured gets done. So, we’re all about measuring and benchmarking as many data points as we can. Just talking about them improves performance. Ask any nurse and they can tell you something we measure.

In Jacksonville, I believe that the longevity of nursing careers at Nemours and the percentage of nurses holding advanced nursing degrees best demonstrate the opportunities nurses have had to build clinical nursing careers in pediatric ambulatory sub-specialty care. We have an environment that has reinforced autonomous development and continuing education.
