What does it mean to be a Magnet® organization? Established by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the term Magnet® has become synonymous with nursing excellence.
Organizations that are awarded Magnet® status must exhibit a visible and documentable commitment to expertise, collaboration, and a nursing environment that is both professionally and personally rewarding.
There are five global nursing issues that define Magnet Recognition® — Transformational Leadership, Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvements, and Empirical Quality Outcomes.
Put simply, Magnet® nursing leaders value staff nurses, involve them in shaping research-based nursing practice, and seek their expertise when it comes to decision-making in patient care delivery. They also encourage open communication between nurses and other members of the health care team, and encourage and reward them for advancing in nursing practice.
Our journey toward Magnet® has put Nemours nurses in the Delaware Valley well on the way to achieving these goals – and ultimately will result in an exemplary professional nursing practice that will lead to the best possible patient outcomes, national recognition for excellence in pediatric nursing, and the creation of an environment that attracts and retains high-quality nurses.
Nemours nurses in Florida have just begun their own journey toward Magnet®, so be sure to check back for updates on their progress as well.
