The General Pediatrics Rotation is a required 6-week learning experience for the resident. The rotation will expose the resident to direct patient care for a variety of pediatric disease states. The resident will participate in services provided to the patients located on the units 3E and 3F of the hospital. The resident will work with medical residents, nurses, aides, attending physicians and the precepting pharmacist to implement pharmaceutical care plans, and to prevent and solve medication therapy issues.
The 3E and 3F units are general pediatric areas with 3E having an emphasis on respiratory patients and 3F emphasizing on GI patients. The Blue team covers 3E and the Gold team covers 3F. The resident will alternate rounds daily on each side with the designated preceptor at the beginning. Based on performance the resident may later round on one unit while the preceptor rounds on the other side. In addition to the General Pediatric teams the resident must also work with the Pulmonary and GI teams who are also covering patients on the two units.
The rotation allows for the resident to develop a variety of skills including decision-making, teaching, and communication skills. The rotation will also help the resident to learn to develop treatment plans and work closely with the medical team. These skills and general disease states followed will also help the resident on further rotations.
