Blood & Bone Marrow Transplant

The Division of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant (BBMT) at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children performs stem cell transplants for patients previously diagnosed with a variety of medical conditions, such as leukemia, anemia, brain tumors, other solid organ tumors, and genetic diseases. As physicians and medical researchers come to understand the usefulness of stem cell transplant, they continue to find diseases that will benefit from the procedure.

The divisions physicians are specially trained and are dedicated to providing the highest level of pediatric care available to children who need blood and bone marrow transplants. The BBMT teams mission is to use a multidisciplinary approach to address all of the patients needs, and to do so with respect, courtesy, and compassion for the patients and their families. The division recognizes the importance of the parents role in the care and healing process of the child and the division strives to involve the parent in every step of the childs recovery.

The division coordinates the patients pretreatment work-up and medical evaluation, insurance coverage for transplant, the transplantation process, and post-transplant care. Patients may be followed by the division for a short time after their transplant and then referred back to their local physician, or the division may follow them until adulthood.
