Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Department treats children needing immediate medical attention for a variety of illnesses and injuries. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Emergency Department offers treatment for minor to life-threatening emergencies, including lacerations, sprains, infections, surgical emergencies, respiratory ailments, cardiac problems, fevers, broken bones, and seizures. Ten full-time attending physicians specializing in pediatric emergency care oversee the care of children in the Emergency Department. The Department faxes records of the children‘s visits to their regular physician within 48 hours of the visit, making phone contact whenever appropriate.

Services Available:

  • The Emergency Department treats children needing immediate medical attention 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • An Urgent Care Center, staffed by attending pediatricians, offers coverage for non-urgent care 7 nights a week from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekends.
  • The community outreach program takes Emergency Department pediatricians into the medical community to provide lectures and workshops on topics such as child safety, office preparedness for emergencies, and acute care of the special needs child.
  • A Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship program brings graduates of residency programs to the Emergency Department to complete 3 years of pediatric emergency medicine subspecialty training.
  • Physician involvement in the Delaware Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Coalition allows participating physicians to improve emergency services delivery to the states children.
