Neonatology

The Division of Neonatology at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children provides immediate intervention for neonates with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions, including necrotizing enterocolitis, omphacoele, gastroschisis, myelomeningocele, intestinal atresias, urogenital disorders, apnea, seizure disorders, and metabolic disorders. The division is staffed with specially trained neonatologists who are supported by 18 neonatal nurse practitioners. A neonatal transport team provides prompt transfer to the NICU. The division works closely with the hospitals other pediatric sub-specialists to provide the highest level of care possible.

The division now attempts to focus on family-centered and developmental care by attending to the environmental needs of the baby. The division recognizes the importance of the parents role in the care and healing process of the child and is dedicated to increased communication in building a strong doctor-parent partnership. The division uses the most up-to-date and innovative techniques available.
