Neurosurgery

The Division of Neurosurgery diagnoses and treats infants, children, and adolescents who require surgery of the central and peripheral nervous system. The Division is staffed by experienced neurosurgeons who are specially trained in Pediatric Neurosurgery, all of whom are board certified in both Neurosurgery and Pediatric Neurosurgery. Frequent diagnoses include hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, brain and spinal tumors, intracranial cysts, traumatic brain and spine injuries, spasticity, peripheral nerve injuries, Chiari malformations, myelomeningocele, syringomyelia, and tethered spinal cord.

The neurosurgeons work with physicians from other specialties to provide comprehensive, integrated care for children with multiple disabilities, including participating in our multi-disciplinary Spinal Dysfunction, Brain Tumor, and Spasticity clinics. The Division offers prenatal consultation and planning for neurosurgical difficulties diagnosed in utero. Through the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children’s alliance with the Christiana Care Health System, the Christiana Care Medical Center transfers newborns who require neurosurgical intervention to the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children for treatment. Through the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children’s alliance with Thomas Jefferson University, infants and children are evaluated and treated at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

One member of the division, Dr. Benjamin Warf, is internationally recognized for developing unique endoscopic techniques for children with hydrocephalus that can allow many children to be treated without placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.
