Sports Medicine Program
The Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Medicine Program is involved in treating injuries associated with athletics that include the knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, and spine, offering services geared toward prevention of those injuries. Young athletes benefit from the multidisciplinary expertise provided by the division, including pediatric orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and nutritionists. The Sports Medicine Complex is large and well appointed with weight training, rehabilitation, and standard- and wheelchair-accessible fitness equipment. The complex also houses an indoor lap pool, basketball court, racquetball court, and bowling alley.
The needs of the pediatric athlete in today's society have expanded. Record numbers of children are participating in the large variety of sports currently offered to children, and with each athletic exposure the risk of injury increases. Children are not small adults; our center offers up-to-date diagnostic, therapeutic techniques and rehabilitation for sports injuries specific to the pediatric athlete. The division is particularly adept in recommending conditioning regimens to prevent overuse injuries, the care of the female athlete, and in addressing the needs of physically challenged athletes.
