Family & Visitor Resources

If you're visiting our hospital, the following will help you navigate our building and campus — and know what to expect.

Presence & Participation Policy

We believe spending time with friends and family is an important part of healing. So parents, guardians and other identified family care providers or visitors are welcome in the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (once they receive a badge) in accordance with patient and family preferences and the clinical judgment of the patient's care team. Quiet hours are between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Check with your child's care team to find out if any additional restrictions apply.

Keep these guidelines in mind when visiting us:
  • Show your ID to the welcome desk in the hospital’s main lobby for a visitor ID badge.
  • Call ahead to make arrangements with the nurse when you’re planning to bring young children.
  • Stay home if you're sick with a cold or if you have a cough or other contagious virus. Instead, call or send an eCard.
  • Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the hospital campus, including parking lots.

Patient & Family Safety

While you're with us, your child's safety is our top priority. We have security throughout the hospital grounds — that includes security cameras, hallway mirrors, security bracelets and badging procedures, just to name a few. To ask questions or voice concerns about patient safety, we encourage you to speak with any member of your care team as soon as possible.

Badges

To help keep our hospital as safe as possible:

  • Anyone entering Nemours Children’s Hospital is required to obtain a badge before going to an inpatient care unit or specialty care appointment.
  • Anyone staying at the hospital for two or more days will get a “Partner in Care” badge, with your picture and name — “partners in care” include family members, friends and anyone else who may be involved in supporting your child during hospitalization.
  • You can get your badge by showing your ID or driver’s license to the attendant at the welcome desk in the main lobby. We’ll scan your card and the information will then be stored in the badging system database.
  • Please remember to wear your badge at all times while you’re here at the hospital.

NCH Badges Are Color Coded

Blue = NCH staff members and volunteers

Green = Family Advisory Council, community or consulting physicians and partners in care (adult family or support team members who will be at the hospital for more than two days)

Yellow = Authorized vendors

Patient Locator

When your child is admitted to the hospital, we provide an ID security bracelet with a locater chip inside so we’ll know where your child is at all times. The ID band is checked each time before a child receives care. If your child wanders away from a designated area or even outside, the locater chip in the bracelet automatically signals an alert — so that our cameras and Associates can help locate your child right away.

Clinical Logistics Center

The Clinical Logistics Center at Nemours Children's Hospital is a unique electronic command center with two important functions: monitoring security on campus and keeping an eye on your child's vital signs. Paramedics on the clinical logistics side are at work around the clock, continually watching trends for each patient. That way, when a device like a heart or breathing monitor indicates that a child may be having difficulty, logistics team members can alert medical staff right away.

Security After Hours

After 9 p.m. every day, the main entrance is under secured access. To enter the hospital after 9 p.m., you’ll need to go to the Emergency Department (ED) entrance and sign in there.

Every inpatient unit (for children at the hospital overnight) is secured 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To enter an inpatient unit, you’ll need to phone in to the nurses’ station to gain entry. Just pick up the handset outside of the unit, identify yourself and you’ll be let in.

Inpatient Visitation Notice

Beginning Friday, Nov. 15, and continuing through flu season, no children under the age of 10 will be permitted to visit inpatients (those staying at the hospital overnight). This temporary restriction is to help prevent the spread of influenza (the flu) — and to give our patients staying at the hospital the best chance of healing.

Overnight Stays

Whether your child needs to be admitted to the hospital for a day or longer, knowing what to expect can help ease some worries and concerns for everyone in your family. Hopefully the answers to these frequently asked questions will help.

How Will My Child Be Admitted?

Your child could be admitted to Nemours Children’s Hospital in one of several ways:
  • directly from the Emergency Department (ED) — in this case, admission paperwork happens at the bedside in the ED, where we can give your family badges
  • directly from the physicians’ office — in this case, you’ll be directed to go to the welcome desk
  • surgical admissions
  • via ambulance or helicopter transport from another medical facility

Where Will My Child Stay?

Your child will stay in one of our kid-friendly, comfortable inpatient care units. Kids’ rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV, refrigerator, phone, in-room safe and bathroom, plus a place for mom and dad to sleep. There's also a special touch-screen monitor that offers Internet and educational options through a program called the GetWellNetwork. And each unit houses a play area/lounge with games, TV, toys, books, tables, couches, highchairs and computers.

Second Floor: Surgery Commons & Rooftop Gardens
Surgery Commons

A number of leading-edge surgical services and programs that are unique in Central Florida are available at Nemours Children's Hospital (NCH). Nemours' unique approach to care is evident in this surgical center, which was specially designed to comfort young patients and their parents.

The large, open, indoor-outdoor space offers lots to see and do, which helps pass the time for those awaiting surgery as well as parents awaiting news.

Here are some other features of our surgery commons:

  • Upon arrival, each parent is given a beeper preloaded with 20 text messages so they can receive updates during surgery.
  • Dressed in disposable jumpsuits and masks, parents are able to escort their child into the operating room to provide comfort. So you can be the last people your child sees before anesthesia and the first ones your child sees when waking up (minus the uniform).
  • Bringing nature into the hospital is not only important for our patients and families, but also our surgical care teams. Most hospitals house their surgical suites in the interior walls of the hospital. At NCH, we brought natural light into the surgical corridor, with floor to ceiling windows. Throughout the day, our surgical teams can take a moment and experience the regenerative power of natural light.
  • The surgery commons offers a toy store with dolls, books and other donated items suitable for patients from birth to age 18. Our Child Life specialists allow the patient to select a toy from the toy closet. That toy goes back to the child during pre-op and will be waiting for the patient after surgery. It’s a strategy our Child Life specialists use to distract patients — these toys give our kids something to look forward to.

Rooftop Gardens

The second floor rooftop garden gives you the best view of Medical City. Lake Nona’s Medical City is one of the country’s leaders in bioscience and research and is home to the Orlando VA Medical Center, University of Central Florida College of Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and University of Florida Research and Academic Center.

Third Floor: Intensive Care Units
Intensive Care Units

The third floor is home to our intensive care units (ICUs), where children receive continuous monitoring and one-on-one nursing care. NCH provides state-of-the-art level II and level III intensive care for newborns and infants. Our NICU has 13 beds, all with private rooms with sleeping accommodations. Family lounges are also located just a few feet away.

Our ICUs include the:

Fourth Floor: Inpatients and Infusion Center & Therapy Garden
Inpatients and Infusion Center

The fourth floor is where kids can receive chemotherapy or any type of infusion therapy. Children are often here for more than three to four hours. To ensure they're as comfortable as possible, each room is private, with Internet access and a TV and monitor so the child can play games. There's also a view of the therapy garden.

Therapy Garden

Our fourth floor therapy garden is one of two rooftop gardens at Nemours Children's Hospital. This garden was designed with the help of physical therapists and may be used during their therapy sessions. Kids can learn how to use crutches or practice navigating stairs or stepping down from a curb.

How Can I Prepare My Child for a Hospital Stay?

When you know ahead of time your child will have an overnight (inpatient) hospital visit, being prepared can help ease some of the anxiety — for both you and your child.

Here are a few helpful tips:
  • Take time to understand everything you can about your child's condition, and talk to your doctor or nurse about specific tests and procedures your child may have.
  • Tell your child age-appropriate details about why an overnight hospital stay is required, and how he or she might feel during and after a test or procedure.
  • Discuss the other patients your child may meet, some who may be very ill.
  • Talk about caregivers' roles, including the different kinds of physicians your child might meet, nurses’ duties and other specialists who could be part of your hospital care team.
  • Don’t forget to care for yourself. Children look to adults for reassurance, and when we’re calm and confident, they will be too.
