At Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, you’ll find the full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient pediatric care. We take a whole-child approach that integrates advanced clinical care with leading-edge research, education, and prevention — to treat your whole child, not just the condition. And no matter what your child’s needs, know that families are always at the center of our care.

Pediatric Surgical Expertise

Surgery for children is very different from surgery for adults. That’s why our pediatric surgical teams are specially trained in pediatric surgery and pediatric surgical subspecialties to help children of all ages — from the smallest newborns just entering the world, to teens on the verge of adulthood.

Using the latest advances in surgery, our pediatric surgical experts perform all kinds of procedures, from complex transplants to robotic-assisted operations.

Top-Notch Pediatric Anesthesiology

Whatever type of procedure is needed, we’ll make sure your child is comfortable before, during and after surgery. In order to provide the safest care, our fellowship-trained, board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists will direct a care team that may include other physicians and nursing staff. Our certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) are Master's-trained, advanced practice nurses licensed to provide pediatric anesthesia to patients in all settings.

Together, our team will thoroughly evaluate your child before any procedure, explain the type of anesthesia we’ll use, and answer all of your questions. Then, we’ll administer your child’s anesthetic medications during the procedure and carefully monitor your child afterward.

We’re able to provide the highest-quality care to even the youngest or most medically complex patients. Our high level of expertise and experience with the unique anesthesia needs of children means our pediatric anesthesiologists are especially qualified to keep your child as comfortable and as calm as possible.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

When it applies, we’re able to offer minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat various conditions at certain Nemours locations. Some procedures typically done with “open surgery” (which requires larger “open” incisions) can be performed using the patient’s natural openings (like the mouth and throat) or through tiny incisions an inch or smaller. And that means shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, less pain and discomfort, reduced chance of infection and bleeding, as well as much smaller scars.

Getting Kids Healed and Back Home Faster

Modern technology makes it possible for our highly skilled Nemours surgeons to perform certain procedures in a “minimally invasive” way. In other words, some operations typically done with “open surgery” (which requires larger “open” incisions) can be performed using the patient’s natural openings (like the mouth and throat) or through tiny incisions an inch or smaller. And that means:

  • shorter hospital stays
  • quicker recovery times
  • less pain and discomfort
  • reduced chance of infection and bleeding
  • much smaller scars

Minimally Invasive Surgery Techniques

Minimally invasive procedures can be performed through either:

  • Endoscopy, in which a small lighted telescope is passed through a body opening. The scope can be used to examine the inside of the body. Instruments can also be passed through the scope to remove small objects such as kidney stones or to take biopsies (when a piece of tissue is obtained for close examination). So, some procedures can be done without any cut at all — and the child can usually be sent home that very same day.
  • Laparoscopy, which involves a few half-inch “keyhole” incisions rather than a large open incision, can be used for diagnosis (to figure out what the problem is) and/or treatment (to repair or remove a problem). One small incision is used for a tiny camera, which gives the surgeon a magnified view inside the body. The other incisions are used for inserting surgical instruments. The surgeon also inflates the abdomen with gas in order to see the inside of the body more clearly. Laparoscopy is often called “band-aid surgery” because the incisions are small enough that they can be covered with small bandages after surgery instead of a large dressing.

Basically, whenever you see or hear “oscopy” or “oscopic” at the end of a procedure’s name, it means “use of a scope” and sometimes other instruments to diagnose, inspect and/or treat a problem.

Of course, our surgeons look at every child’s case individually to see if any type of minimally invasive surgery is an option — and whether it would be the best course of treatment for each individual child. Whether or not your child can — or should — get this kind of surgery depends on a number of things, from your child’s condition to the complexity of the surgery needed.

Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery simply takes minimally invasive surgery steps further. With robotic-assisted laparoscopy, the surgeon uses computer-controlled, specially jointed mechanical hands. This offers the surgeon more stable maneuvering and 3-D imagery (magnified by 15 times) of what’s going on inside the child’s body. Robotics can also be used for endoscopies — through telescopes, lenses and lights using flexible instruments.

Among the first to offer breakthrough robotic surgeries, the Nemours team has continued to evolve and learn new techniques in this area — all with the singular goal of making surgery easier and recovery times quicker for kids.

Robotic-Assisted Urologic Surgery

Our highly skilled surgeons at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children use the state-of-the-art da Vinci® robotic surgery system to perform many types of corrective and reconstructive procedures in a minimally invasive way. Our da Vinci® robot technology allows our surgeons to perform delicate urological surgeries using smaller instruments with greater dexterity. This translates into smaller scars, less postoperative pain, decreased risk of infection and faster healing times for the children we treat.

Partners for Perinatal Management

Through a program called "Nemours Partners for Perinatal Management," we offer fetal testing and specialist consultations for babies in utero (in the mother’s womb). We work with expectant parents facing a possible congenital (present at birth) condition or defect and try to get an early fetal diagnosis and figure out the next steps. We'll work with you and your referring doctor to arrange for diagnostic testing (fetal MRI and/or echocardiogram) as well as specialty and surgical consultations, if needed. Our goal is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life.

If an operation is necessary once your baby's born, you’ll be able to meet with your surgeon well before the delivery so we can address all of your questions and concerns ahead of time. Our surgical staff is made up of highly-trained pediatric specialists including board-certified surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses who are dedicated entirely to pediatric surgery for even the tiniest of patients.

Pediatric Wound Care Clinic

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children offers exceptional, compassionate pediatric wound care. Our multidisciplinary staff includes doctors from general surgery, plastic surgery and orthopedic surgery, as well as specially trained wound nurses and other health care professionals. Together, we’ll formulate a customized plan to help your child’s wound heal and minimize any accompanying pain and stress.

The benefit of coming to a pediatric-focused wound care center is that we understand the issues that only affect children and will take these into consideration when planning which dressings and medications will be part of your child’s treatment.

Whether we meet your child as an inpatient in the hospital or at an outpatient appointment at our pediatric wound care clinic, our treatment goal is the same: To prevent infection, promote healing, reduce pain, and reduce scarring so kids can get back to doing the things they love.
