All Medical Services at Our Hospital

At Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, you’ll find the full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient pediatric care. We take a whole-child approach that integrates advanced clinical care with leading-edge research, education, and prevention — to treat your whole child, not just the condition. And no matter what your child’s needs, know that families are always at the center of our care.

Pediatric Surgical Expertise

Surgery for children is very different from surgery for adults. That’s why our pediatric surgical teams are specially trained in pediatric surgery and pediatric surgical subspecialties to help children of all ages — from the smallest newborns just entering the world, to teens on the verge of adulthood.

Using the latest advances in surgery, our pediatric surgical experts perform all kinds of procedures, from complex transplants to robotic-assisted operations.

At Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, we specialize in surgery for the full spectrum of pediatric specialties and subspecialties:

Whatever type of procedure your child might need, we’ll make sure your child is comfortable before, during, and after surgery. Learn more about what you can expect with anesthesiology or sedation.

Surgical Quality & Safety

During any operation or procedure, your child’s well-being and safety are our top priorities. At duPont Hospital for Children, we’re a national leader in surgical results and overall quality of surgical care. We're involved in a nationwide effort to improve pediatric surgical care.

By rigorously measuring and comparing our results to other pediatric health care providers across the country, we’re able to look at how we’re doing by tracking and analyzing information about our patients’ “outcomes” (or how our care affects the children we treat).

Preparing for Surgery

If your child needs an operation, you can trust our pediatric surgical teams. Our specialists (surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses), understand what kids need, psychologically and physically.

The Top 10 Things Kids Need to Know About Surgery

Take your child on a pediatric surgery video tour with Sheridan on her surgery day. By sharing the top 10 things kids need to know about surgery, this fun, kid-friendly video shows children and teens what to expect step-by-step when they have surgery at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. This video was made possible thanks to our generous donors through the Nemours Fund for Children's Health.

Easing Fears and Concerns About Surgery

The best way to prepare for any surgery, whether it’s a routine outpatient procedure or a complex operation requiring an overnight hospital stay, is to be open and honest with your child. Kids of all ages cope better when they have a concrete idea about what’s happening and why — and how they might feel before, during, and after the procedure. Take time to:

  • Help your child understand the condition or physical problem that requires surgery.
  • Familiarize your child with the necessary medical procedure(s).
  • Give your child a “step-by-step” list about what to expect from the time you arrive, to well after the surgical procedure.
  • Talk about how your child may feel before, during, and after the surgery.
