Six new directors mark first major expansion since organization’s founding

The Nemours Foundation announced today that it has expanded its Board of Directors with the appointment of six new Directors. This is the first major expansion of the Board since Nemours was founded in 1936.

“Nemours is a sophisticated, multi-location, high quality provider of pediatric health services. The Nemours Board will benefit substantially from the addition of the talent and experience of the new Directors. They will make an important contribution to Nemours’ continued growth and development as one of the nation’s leading children’s health systems,” stated Hugh M. Durden, Chairman of the Alfred I. duPont Testamentary Trust.

The first independent Board Member, Richard T. Christopher, was appointed in January 2005. Previously, the Nemours Foundation was governed by a six-member board comprised of the Trustees of the Alfred I. duPont Testamentary Trust. Those Trustees have the option to continue to serve on The Nemours Foundation Board of Directors. Nemours is the primary beneficiary of the Alfred I. duPont Testamentary Trust, which is currently valued at approximately $4 billion.

We were very deliberate in our selection of these six new Board Members,” said Nemours Foundation Chairman John F. Porter III. “In many cases, their expertise is outside the health care industry and that was intentional on our part. We were looking for leadership that will allow Nemours to advance its mission using inspiration from a variety of industries. We believe these individuals have the ability to help Nemours revolutionize how we deliver health care for children.”

The newly appointed Board Members are:

Brian P. Anderson (Director): Chief Financial Officer of Baxter International until 2004, Anderson joined Baxter in 1991 after spending 15 years with Touche Ross (previously Deloitte & Touche) in Chicago and Washington D.C. Anderson holds a BS in Accounting (magna cum laude) from Howard University and an MBA from Indiana University. He also serves on the Board of Directors of WW Grainger and Pulte Homes.

Leonard L. Berry, Ph.D. (Director): One of the most frequent contributors to services-marketing literature in the country, Dr. Berry is Distinguished Professor of Marketing and holds the M.B. Zale Chair in Retailing and Marketing Leadership in the Lowry Mays College and Graduate School of Business at Texas A&M University. He is the founder of Texas A&M’s Center for Retailing Studies and former national president of the American Marketing Association.

Rosa Baumanis Hakala (Director): With more than 20 years experience in retail supply chain management, Hakala is Vice President of International Logistics for The Home Depot. Previously, she served as General Manager responsible for strategic development, sales and operational activities for Sea-Land Service, Inc. in North and Latin America. She is a graduate of Princeton University.

Terri L. Kelly (Director): Kelly is the President and Chief Executive Officer of W.L. Gore and has been with the organization for more than 22 years. In an early role as Process Engineer, Kelly was involved in the development of a coating process for the fabrics division and redesigned the coating operation’s equipment and procedures. She holds a BA in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware.

J. Michael McGinnis, MD, MPP (Director): Previously counselor to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Dr. McGinnis is now Senior Scholar at the Institute of Medicine in The National Academies of Science. He also served as deputy assistant secretary for health and assistant surgeon general in the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton. Dr. McGinnis’ international service includes responsibilities with the World Health Organization.

Robert G. Riney (Director): Riney is Chief Operating Officer for the Henry Ford Health System and responsible for the operations of Henry Ford Medical Group, Henry Ford Hospital, and Henry Ford Bi-County and Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospitals. He also serves as the President of the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration.

In January 2005, Richard T. Christopher (Director) was appointed to The Nemours Foundation Board. He is President and Chief Executive Officer of Patterson-Schwartz Real Estate and Chairman of the Board of Managers for Nemours’ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del.

In addition, five Trustees of the Alfred I. duPont Testamentary Trust will continue as Board Members of The Nemours Foundation. Those Trustees continuing to serve on The Nemours Foundation Board of Directors are:

Nemours offers an integrated spectrum of clinical treatment coupled with research, advocacy, and educational health and prevention services extending to all families in the communities it serves. Nemours employs over 4,400 individuals, including 430 pediatric physicians, specialists and surgeons who cared for approximately a quarter of a million children in 2007.
