Robert Stanton, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and Chief of Surgery at the Nemours Children’s Clinic, Pensacola, recently returned from a two week military deployment to El Salvador. Dr. Stanton is a Colonel with the Delaware Army National Guard. As part of a 32 member Medical Readiness Team, he participated in Operation New Horizon ’06.
The United States Army Reserve, with assistance from the National Guard services, has conducted a New Horizons exercise in El Salvador and the Dominican Republic for the past 10 years. Each year, the military establishes a base camp in a remote, under served province of each country. Army Engineers build schools and clinics, and Medical treatment teams travel to remote villages and towns to provide medical care to both children and adults. Basic acute medical care, preventive medicine, and dental care are provided to the local population, and free medicine is distributed to those in need.
Dr. Stanton stated, "The people of these towns are always eager to bring their children to see our physicians. They greatly appreciate the care we provide, and seeing the children is especially gratifying to the members of our treatment teams. The younger members of our National Guard unit may never have worked outside the United States, and it is an eye opener for some of them to see how children live in areas of the world that are less fortunate than we are in the United States."
"Participation in these exercises helps the members of the National Guard learn to work together with efficiency under less than ideal circumstances and serves as a valuable learning experience for military members who may be required to mobilize in support of the global war on terrorism, or in support of disaster relief efforts here at home."
