John F. (Jack) Porter III, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Nemours, today announced the election of David J. Bailey, MD, MBA, as President and Chief Executive Officer of Nemours.
“We have the highest confidence in Dr. Bailey’s demonstrated leadership ability to continue the momentum of this organization toward becoming the premier children’s health system in the country,” said Porter on behalf of the Board of Directors. “It is a credit to the strength of the Nemours leadership team that this position was filled by an individual already within the organization.” Porter said the search committee quickly determined the strength of Bailey’s leadership capabilities after conducting an extensive national search and interviewing both internal and external finalists.
As part of a planned transition, Bailey will assume his new responsibilities immediately, replacing W. Jeff Wadsworth who is retiring after serving in a leadership capacity for Nemours since 1982.
As President and Chief Executive Officer, Bailey will lead the Nemours children’s health care system--one of the largest pediatric group practices in the United States, operating in four states (DE, FL, PA and NJ).
Nemours is focused on pursuing excellence in children’s health and health care through its four core service dimensions: patient-centered medical care, biomedical research, education, and health promotion/disease prevention.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to help lead Nemours in our journey toward even greater excellence in pediatric subspecialty care,“ said Bailey. “There is no greater privilege than to continue Alfred I. duPont’s legacy by compassionately serving children with the finest patient-centered care available.”
Bailey, who has been with Nemours since 1997, most recently served as Executive Vice President of Patient Operations and Chief Operating Officer, a position he held since 2003. He joined the organization as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in the Nemours Children’s Clinic in Orlando, Florida, and became the Chief Executive of the Practice and Medical Director at the Nemours Children’s Clinic in Pensacola in 1999. In April 2002, his role was expanded to Chief Executive of the Practice for all locations of Nemours Children’s Clinic in Florida. Bailey is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and serves on the National Board of Medical Examiners. In the community, he serves on the Florida State University College of Medicines Community Advisory Board.
Bailey was born in Beckley, West Virginia. He received an undergraduate degree in biology from West Virginia University, his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University and an MBA from the University of South Florida. He completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at the University of Florida and his pediatric internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he was also a Chief Resident. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps, reaching the rank of Major. He has held various positions at numerous medical centers and schools including Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and Tripler Army Medical Center and the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii.
