Founded originally as the “hospital for crippled children” in 1940, the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children has long provided regional, national and international leadership in the field of orthopedics. With 11 full-time fellowship trained surgeons, duPont Hospital offers one of the largest clinical practices in the United States, as a well as one of the country’s largest pediatric training programs for orthopedic residents and fellows. Today, after more than six decades, and the hospital’s evolution to a full-service children’s medical center, the Department of Orthopedics accounts for more than 35,000 outpatient visits annually.

When it came time to select a new Chairman for the Department of Orthopedics, it was crucial that an extensive search be coordinated. After interviews with national leaders in the field of orthopedics and searches through the Curriculum Vitae of candidates nationwide, it was determined the best choice should come from within our own orthopedic program.

William G. Mackenzie, MD, the new Chairman for the Orthopedics Department, has been serving as acting Department Chair for the past two years. He is a highly skilled orthopedic surgeon recognized worldwide for his care and treatment of children with skeletal dysplasia. In addition, Dr. Mackenzie has special expertise in muscle diseases and the surgical correction of limb-length discrepancy. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of orthopedic surgery at Jefferson Medical College.

Dr. Mackenzie is active in numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. He is an active and recognized member of the Little People of Americas medical advisory board and presenter at its annual conferences. He also serves as the medical director of the Dwarf Athletic Association of America.

In addition to being the author of numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Mackenzie has been a highly sought presenter at national and international conferences.

“It is an honor to welcome Dr. William Mackenzie as the new Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. His personal commitment to the Department and Nemours will position him well for success in this role,” says Roy Proujansky, MD, Executive Vice President, Patient Operations and Chief Operating Officer of Nemours.
