Get on Board with Child Safety! – a national injury prevention campaign spearheaded by Dorel Juvenile Group’s Safety 1st brand and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) – has just selected partner children’s hospitals to open safety stores and centers in six locations across the country. With funding support from the campaign, the six hospitals will create safety hubs where families can learn about injury prevention and purchase items necessary to keep their children secure.
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death of American children ages 1 to 14 years, and many parents and caregivers are unaware of the risks around the home and on the road that present a danger to their children. By opening safety stores and centers and through participation in the Get on Board with Child Safety! campaign, the hospitals involved are promoting injury prevention as a priority for families and caregivers.
Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Wilmington, Del.) and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will each open a dedicated, free-standing safety store staffed by health educators. The stores will be modeled after the safety store at Indianapolis’ Riley Hospital for Children, which opened in 2005. Children’s Hospital of Orange County (Orange, Calif.), St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston) will each open a safety center, which will be integrated into existing hospital retail spaces or programs. The six hospitals were selected by NACHRI and Dorel Juvenile Group out of 18 applicants.
Safety stores and centers will provide resources and offer products related to child injury prevention, such as cabinet locks, outlet covers, car seats, bike helmets, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
“The Get on Board with Child Safety! campaign is excited to work with these hospitals to continue educating parents and caregivers about preventing child injury,” said Karen Seaver Hill, director of child advocacy at NACHRI. “These hospitals are extremely accomplished in treating child trauma, and we have no doubt they will be successful in promoting injury prevention to the diverse populations they serve.”
All of the safety stores and centers are anticipated to open to the public by the end of 2007.
