Nemours will move quickly to open its children’s hospital in Central Florida

Orlando, FL - The State of Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) approved Nemours third Certificate of Need (CON) application to develop a pediatric health care system in Central Florida.

“We appreciate the State of Florida’s support for Nemours Children’s Hospital Orlando. We are thankful for the leadership of Governor Crist, Lt. Governor Kottkamp and our Central Florida legislative delegation in guiding our vision to reality. We also want to thank Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration for their efforts and diligence,” stated Dr. David Bailey, President and Chief Executive Officer for Nemours. “The support of Central Florida’s elected officials has been important in our approval today, especially that of Mayors Crotty and Dyer. We also owe particular thanks to the many municipalities and organizations that supported us in the belief that we can – and should – do more for the children of Florida.”

The Central Florida community understands and wants the benefits offered by a new top-tier children’s hospital and associated pediatric research, advocacy and training.

This hospital will do much to establish Central Florida as a leading health care region in the country. The synergies achieved by cooperation with the medical school at the University of Central Florida and the researchers at the Burnham Institute will be truly revolutionary. Nemours looks forward to supporting the good work occurring at our community hospitals and other partner institutions and intends to be the preeminent voice for children in this country and, with the announcement, is well on its way to achieving that goal.

About Nemours

Nemours, one of the nation’s largest pediatric health systems, is dedicated to achieving higher standards in children’s health. Nemours offers an integrated spectrum of clinical treatment coupled with research, advocacy, and educational health and prevention services extending to all families in the communities it serves. Starting with Alfred I. duPont’s bequest over seventy years ago, Nemours has grown into a multi-dimensional organization offering personalized clinical and preventive care focused on children.

Nemours owns and operates the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware and major children’s specialty clinics in Delaware (Wilmington), Florida (Jacksonville, Orlando and Pensacola), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and Bryn Mawr) and New Jersey (Atlantic City and Voorhees). Having recently received preliminary approval from the State of Florida, Nemours will establish a new full-service children’s hospital as part of an integrated pediatric health campus in Orlando. KidsHealth.org, the world’s most visited pediatric health care Web site for parents, kids and teens, is a project of Nemours.

Nemours employs over 4,400 individuals, including 430 pediatric physicians, specialists and surgeons who cared for approximately a quarter of a million children in 2007. The organization’s goal is to align with parents, physicians, community leaders, children’s advocates and elected officials to ensure optimal wellness for every child.
