On October 29, 2007, Mary Newman, RN, CPON, was selected as the Nursing Spectrum magazine's National Nurse of the Year in the category of Clinical Care.
As a direct care nurse in the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BBMT) at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Newman demonstrates her compassion and dedication every day.,/p>
She is an experienced clinical expert in caring for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients, prioritizing and managing the complex care needs of critically ill patients and their families.
"Mary can be found not only treating the patients during their months of chemotherapy but also bringing solace to a distraught mother when her child is faced with a relapse, seeking pain medication to ease a patient’s discomfort, and counseling siblings who are overwhelmed by the agony a life threatening disease can bring to a family. She is a true icon of what a nurse should be," says Dyane Bunnell, MSN, RN-BC, CPON, Clinical Nurse Educator.
Newman graduated from Gwynedd Mercy College in Gwynedd Valley, PA, with an Associate of Science in Nursing. After working for Metropolitan Hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, Parkview Hospital, Visiting Nurse and Coram Healthcare Home Infusion, Newman joined duPont Hospital in 2001. She has continued to hone her skills by attending conferences for hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant, and research and this year achieved National ONCC certification as a Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse.
In addition to her nursing duties, Newman shares her clinical expertise by precepting and mentoring nurse colleagues, earning Preceptor of the Year honors for three consecutive years. She also serves on the nursing shared governance council at the Hospital, the Nursing Research and Education Council, President of the local chapter of the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses (APHON), and winning the Marie L. Des Barres Award/Nurse of the Year in 2006 and the Delaware Excellence in Nursing Practice Award Winner in 2007.
"Mary’s greatest passion is to serve as a patient and family advocate and she brings extraordinary compassion to her clinical role. This recognition speaks volumes about the quality of nursing care Nemours delivers each and every day to patients and their families," says Alexis Perri, MSN, RN, Interim Chief Nurse Executive.
