Fun Day at Beckwith Camp and Conference Center on July 19

Beckwith CampPensacola, FL - Nemours Children's Clinic Pensacola and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have teamed together to offer teenagers (ages 13 - 18) the opportunity to enjoy all of the excitement and activities of a typical summer camp. The Fun Day will be held at Beckwith Camp and Conference Center in South Baldwin County, Alabama on Saturday, July 19. The camp helps these kids learn to become more comfortable with the physical and emotional challenges that are associated with diabetes. It will also give them an opportunity to interact with peers and positive role models and to be in an environment that fosters appropriate levels of independence and sharing.

At the camp, adolescents will participate in the Beckwith Challenge Course which helps groups build teamwork, increase communication skills and raise the level of group cooperation. All activities are supervised by highly trained instructors and the camp will be staffed by Diabetes Educators and Nurse Practitioners from Nemours Children's Clinic with transportation being provided by ADA.

While the kids are at day camp, the parents and/or caregivers of children with diabetes can attend a seminar called "Everyday Challenges" given by Michele Zerah, MD, pediatric endocrinologist with Nemours Children's Clinic. "The adolescent period is a very trying time for any teenager, but more challenging for a teenager with diabetes. Parents, providers and the adolescents can work together to make this a positive time in life," says Dr. Zerah.

The Division of Endocrinology at the Nemours Children’s Clinic Pensacola has a recognized diabetes education program and recently obtained ADA acknowledgement for their Pediatric Diabetes Self-Management Education Program. The Division is staffed with three pediatric endocrinologists, two nurse practitioners, a registered dietician and a certified diabetes educator.

For more information on future events, contact Lynne Cranford with ADA at (850) 478-5957 or for more information on Nemours Children’s Clinic.

About Nemours

Nemours, one of the nation’s largest pediatric health systems, is dedicated to achieving higher standards in children’s health. Nemours offers an integrated spectrum of clinical treatment coupled with research, advocacy, and educational health and prevention services extending to all families in the communities it serves. Starting with Alfred I. duPont’s bequest over seventy years ago, Nemours has grown into a multi-dimensional organization offering personalized clinical and preventive care focused on children.

Nemours owns and operates the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware and major children’s specialty clinics in Delaware (Wilmington), Florida (Jacksonville, Orlando and Pensacola), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and Bryn Mawr) and New Jersey (Atlantic City and Voorhees). Having recently received preliminary approval from the State of Florida, Nemours will establish a new full-service children’s hospital as part of an integrated pediatric health campus in Orlando. KidsHealth.org, the world’s most visited pediatric health care Web site for parents, kids and teens, is a project of Nemours.

Nemours employs over 4,400 individuals, including 430 pediatric physicians, specialists and surgeons who cared for approximately a quarter of a million children in 2007. The organization’s goal is to align with parents, physicians, community leaders, children’s advocates and elected officials to ensure optimal wellness for every child.
