Wilmington, DE – Executives from Subaru of America, Inc. visited the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children to present the keys to a new Subaru Tribeca SUV for use by the hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention Program in their community outreach initiatives.
Subaru will cover the cost of the vehicle lease for one year with the option for the contract to be renewed at the end of the term. Peter Lustgarten and Stuart Lustgarten, owners of Concordville Nissan-Subaru, and generous contributors to the duPont Hospital for Children, were instrumental in orchestrating this generous donation.
The duPont Hospital’s Trauma and Injury Prevention Program, funded in part by a grant from Kohl’s Care for Kids, provides education to families on child passenger safety, bicycle safety and home safety.
According to Safe Kids Worldwide (www.safekids.org) more children ages 1 to 14 die from accidental injuries such as motor vehicle crashes, fires, drowning, poisoning and falls than any other cause and many more are permanently disabled. The duPont Hospital’s 2007 trauma registry shows that falls remain the top cause for injuries, with parents being the major factor in causing or having the ability to prevent the fall.
Child passenger safety, especially the use of booster seats for children ages
4-8, continues to be a top priority for injury prevention. There were increases noted in all injury categories, but one such disturbing increase was the 38 percent increase in children who suffered abuse. Other large increases of note were a 27 percent increase in bicycle related accidents and a 64 percent increase in pedestrian accidents. There was also a significant increase in animal-related injuries and water-related injuries.
“This data shows a need for safety education for children, their parents and the other adults in the child’s life,” says Sean Elwell, RN, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, duPont Hospital for Children. “The Subaru Tribeca will help us to take our injury prevention messages, like our bicycle rodeos for young riders that stress the need for helmet and street safety, to neighborhoods across the Delaware Valley.”
