Pediatric specialty clinic opened in E. Hempfield

ribbon cutting ceremonyA new clinic offering specialists for children opened this week in East Hempfield Township.

The Nemours Children's Clinic will offer the care of three pediatric cardiologists and a pulmonologist two days a week at 2128 Embassy Drive, Suite A. The clinic expands the local reach of Nemours, which owns the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., and a number of children's specialty clinics in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida.

Last year, Nemours provided two hospitalists to Lancaster General Hospital. The physicians work in LGH's pediatric unit with hospitalized children. Both Nemours' local clinic and its hospital presence here will grow in the future.

The clinic will be open Thursday afternoons and Fridays at first.

"It's starting off as a few days a week," said Dr. Kevin Lorah, Lancaster General's medical director for children's services. "As we assess the demand, and see how the schedules are, we may expand the timing of their specialties and add other specialists." New specialists could include ones in fields such as orthopedics, nephrology or hematology, Lorah said. The number of hospitalists at LGH also will grow, Lorah said. Two more are coming this summer, in July and August, and a fifth one is supposed to join the group by the end of the year.

The goal is to have around-the-clock coverage in LGH by the hospitalists.

The Nemours pediatric cardiologists also will be available for consultations in LGH's pediatric unit, as well as the Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and its nursery. Hershey Medical Center also has a pediatric specialty clinic on Good Drive, in an office building near the Women & Babies Hospital. The clinic offers pediatric specialists including cardiologists, nephrologists, pulmonologists and rheumatologists.

Nemours owns and operates the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware and major children’s specialty clinics in Delaware (Wilmington), Florida (Jacksonville, Orlando and Pensacola), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and Bryn Mawr) and New Jersey (Atlantic City and Voorhees). Having recently received preliminary approval from the State of Florida, Nemours will establish a new full-service children’s hospital as part of an integrated pediatric health campus in Orlando. KidsHealth.org, the world’s most visited pediatric health care Web site for parents, kids and teens, is a project of Nemours.

Nemours employs over 4,400 individuals, including 430 pediatric physicians, specialists and surgeons who cared for approximately a quarter of a million children in 2007.
