For most specialty departments in Jacksonville and Orange Park, Florida, there are three ways to schedule an appointment for your child:
When you are initiating the appointment, simply ask your child’s primary care doctor for the phone number of the specialty clinic you need and call directly. An automated system will ask you if your child is a new patient. If the answer is “yes,” then press “1” and you will be connected to the intake office.
The intake office will pre-register your child by asking for your child’s name, address, phone number, date of birth, primary care doctor, and insurance information, and an appointment will be made. If medical records or lab results are required first, we will obtain them (usually via fax) and then call you back to schedule the appointment.
If your child’s primary care doctor initiates the appointment, the intake office will either speak with you, the parent, at that time, or contact you shortly after to gather all the information necessary for pre-registration and schedule the visit.
On the day your appointment is booked, you will be sent a letter confirming the appointment time and date. The letter will also contain a checklist about what you’ll need to bring to the appointment.
Two appointment reminders will also be given as the date approaches: one, a letter, 14 days prior to the appointment; the other, a phone call 72 hours before.
Your child’s primary care doctor can make a referral to a specialty clinic via the e-Referral service on Nemours.org. The intake office will receive this referral and then contact you to pre-register your child and schedule the appointment.
Please note that there are two Jacksonville specialties that are exceptions to these processes:
Orthopedics – When you call to make an orthopedic appointment for your child, you will not be transferred to the intake office. The Orthopedic department staff will pre-register and schedule your child themselves.
Ophthalmology – For ophthalmology appointments, the intake office will only handle pre-registration; appointment scheduling will be done directly by Ophthalmology staff.
