Outpatient Primary Care Visits

Nemours offers several primary care satellite offices throughout Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania. Primary care is also available at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children through a teaching clinic – that is, a clinic where residents (doctors who have graduated from medical school and are training in a specialty area, such as pediatrics) see patients under the supervision of attending physicians (doctors who have completed medical school and all of the required training and are in charge of your child’s care).

When your child comes to us for a primary care visit, a referral is not needed. But please do bring the following:

  • photo ID
  • medical and pharmacy insurance cards
  • preferred pharmacy name and phone number
  • names of all medications, including over-the-counter medications, your child is currently taking
  • guardianship and custody papers, if a legal guardian rather than a parent accompanies the child
  • forms for school and other physicals
  • a list of prior immunizations

To make your appointment go more smoothly, please keep the following in mind:

  • Appointments must be made ahead of time, generally by phone.
  • If you already have an appointment for one child and want another child to be seen as well, please call ahead.  We are not able to piggyback appointments that have not been scheduled ahead of time.
  • If your child is sick and you are unsure how urgently he or she needs to be seen, please make your appointment through the nurse line instead of with the front-office staff.  Only the nurse can determine the urgency of a situation.
  • Know your insurance plan. For instance:
    • Do you need referrals for specialists?
    • Do you know your coverage levels?
    • Do you need to precertify for tests and procedures?

After-Hours Calls: KidsHealth On-Call

The KidsHealth On-Call nurse triage line provides after-hours support for Nemours’ 11 primary care practices throughout the Delaware Valley. Despite its name, this service is not a part of the KidsHealth.org web site; rather it is run through the primary care satellite offices.

If a parent calls their Nemours primary care doctor after office hours, on holidays, or over the weekend, the call is automatically directed to an on-call triage nurse who is trained to provide medical advice for concerns like fevers and earaches, and in some cases ER referrals for more serious symptoms like persistent headache or injuries. In addition to the 20 nurses on staff, there are also 10 clerks that help keep this service running smoothly when families need it most.

Primary care patients may be seen on weekends at some locations. Please call the office for weekend appointment availability.
