Preparing for Surgery
Our surgical team consists of highly trained pediatric specialists, including surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses who understand the psychological and physical needs of children undergoing surgery. Ideally, your child will return home as soon as possible to minimize the time away from family. In many cases, that’s the same day.
Note: If there are guardianship issues affecting the child who is having surgery, it is important to discuss them with the child’s doctor prior to the surgery.
Easing Fears and Concerns
Preparing your child for surgery is not as hard as you might think. The key is sharing information at your child’s level of understanding, correcting misconceptions, and dispelling any fears your child may have.
You may need to help your child understand the physical problem that requires the surgery and become familiar with some of the procedures he or she will undergo in the hospital. Children of all ages cope much better if they have some concrete idea of what is going to happen and why it is necessary. But, to do that, you need to prepare yourself first, and learn as much as possible about the upcoming procedure and process.
