What is the trial about?
The purpose of this study is to find out if people should take an asthma controller medication based on the type of inflammatory cells present in their airway.
Who can participate?
Children at least 12 years old who are healthy other than having asthma. A study coordinator will discuss other entry requirements.
What is involved?
This study has two main parts:
- run-in (4-6 weeks)
- treatment (36 weeks)
In addition, if your child has taken asthma controller medication in the last 6 weeks there may be a washout period (9 weeks). The whole study lasts 40-51 weeks (about 10-12 months) with 9-11 study visits and 8 scheduled telephone calls. Study visits are from 1-3 hours long. Phone calls usually take less than 10 minutes to complete.
Testing includes numerous breathing tests, sputum induction, urine testing, medical history, physical examination, questionnaires and peak flow/e-diary.
