Portable Gait Analysis Devices
Project investigators:
The goals are to accurately measure gait and activity while children are in their everyday environment. To this end we are developing a small unobtrusive gait and activity sensor that is low-cost and accurate for people with various disabilities such as cerebral palsy. While there are commercially available sensors based on accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS technology, these are not ideal for this population. One of the variables of interest in this project is instantaneous walking velocity, while walking indoors. To do this we can measure cadence (steps per minute) relatively easily. In order to determine velocity of gait, however, we must measure stride length as well. Areas of investigation in this regard include using gyroscopes on the leg and range-finders on the feet.
