B+ Foundation 5K Walk
The third annual B+ 5K was held on Thursday June 18th, 2009, in Wilmington, DE. The B+ Foundation is a non-profit organization that honors the memory of Andrew McDonough. Established by Andrew’s dad, Joe McDonough, this foundation raises money to fight pediatric cancer by increasing awareness and charitable donations throughout the US. Over 1,700 kids and adults participated in this fun event and helped to raise over $80,000. Inspired by the Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research (NCCCR) Director, Dr. Ayyappan Rajasekaran, the NCCCR formed team Leukemia Terminators consisting of NCCCR members and their families and friends. Undeterred by the rain, team Leukemia Terminators, led by captain Valerie Sampson, donned their t-shirts (designed by our own graduate student Sridevi Mony) and came out to support this event. The skies cleared just in time for everyone to run, jog or walk the beautiful course around the Brandywine River. Accolades go out to Ryan McSpadden who finished first in the team in an impressive time of 21 mins 30 sec. Special thanks to the kids Peter and Kate Napper, Margaret and Sebastian Krauthauser who all completed their first 5K. The generous donations of kind supporters helped Team Leukemia Terminators raise $1,316.00 for this event. Dr. Ayyappan Rajasekaran and the team captain Valerie Sampson extends heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to all participants and supporters. We could not have done it without you! The Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research (NCCCR) is the proud recipient of the first research grant awarded by the B+ Foundation for $250,000.
