Background
Nemours Children's Clinic was recently selected as one of the clinical centers to enter into an NIH contract that will establish a cooperative research network to develop, implement, analyze, and disseminate controlled trials of psychological interventions integrated with routine diabetes care that are designed to enhance family management of type 1 diabetes during the transition from late childhood to early adolescence. The principal investigators and co-investigators from each clinical site and the data coordinating center form a steering committee that will advise the NICHD Prevention Research Branch on the design and implementation of these studies. Each clinical site will then be responsible for enrolling a portion of the study samples, implementing the study protocols with those patients and families, and participating in the analysis and dissemination of the study findings.
What We're Doing
Since the funding announcement was made just prior to the publication of this information, the study steering committee has not yet begun to formulate the specifics of the cooperative research program that will be implemented. The NICHD contract calls for an initial 18-month pilot and feasibility testing period followed by a larger randomized controlled trial that will be performed, analyzed, and disseminated over the subsequent 3.5 years. The duration of the contract is from September, 2003 through August, 2008.
Some of What We've Found
As described above, the cooperative research network has yet to implement any studies under this contract. Planning of initial pilot and feasibility studies will begin in September, 2003.
