Background
This 3-year, $300,000 Clinical Research Grant (January 2004-December 2006) was funded by the American Diabetes Association. The Principal Investigator is Michael A. Harris, Ph.D., of Washington Unviersity in St. Louis, and Nemours Jacksonville is a subcontract site, with Tim Wysocki, Ph.D., as Co-Investigator. The project will test whether home-based delivery of a previously validated behavioral family therapy intervention is more effective than conventional clinic delivery of the same treatment. Outcomes include measures of treatment adherence, diabetic control, and parent-adolescent relationships in general and around diabetes.
What We're Doing
Families of adolescents with type 1 diabetes that is in poor control will be assigned randomly to a home-based or clinic-based delivery of a family behavior therapy intervention that we have previously shown to be effective. The intervention, Behavioral Family Systems Therapy (BFST), provides families with training in communication and problem solving skills and teaches them to apply these skills to common diabetes-related problems. This study is a collaboration between Michael A. Harris, Ph.D., at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Tim Wysocki, Ph.D., at Nemours Children's Clinic-Jacksonville.
Some of What We've Found
