Changes in Concentration of Serum Markers of Oxidative Damage in Patients with T1DM: Relation to Glycemic Variability

We postulate that improved glycemic control and decreased mean amplitude of the glycemic excursions (MAGE) will increase glutathione (GSH) concentrations and improve oxidative stress in T1DM youth. GSH is a tripeptide contained in the RBCs. We will measure this, as well as concentrations of CRP (marker of inflammation), fibrinogen (thrombosis), and n-nitrotyrosine (protein tissue damage) in patients participating in a multicenter trial also sponsored by the JDRF using continuous glucose sensors in children with diabetes (see below). We hope to learn if glycemic variability contributes to oxidative stress in T1DM.
