Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville is one of a select group of institutions in the country with a blood and bone marrow transplant program accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT), which establishes high standards for programs offering stem cell transplants.
We’re also recognized by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) as an affiliated center for matched unrelated donor transplants.
Partnering with Mayo Clinic & Wolfson Children's Hospital
We don’t just use the vast experience of our own staff and physicians – our Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Program is a unique collaboration between Nemours Children's Clinic and two renowned organizations:
The actual transplants take place in the children’s inpatient unit located at the adjacent Wolfson Children’s Hospital. The Mayo Clinic maintains the program’s adult transplant unit and cryopreservation laboratory (for storing the stem cells). And Nemours provides kids’ care before and after the procedure.
So a whole team of physicians and staff at all three locations use their expertise and experience to look out for the very best interests of your child. Both the inpatient and outpatient areas are equipped with a play area/lounge with video games, board games, art supplies, toys, books, and a computer. Many of these can also be brought into your child’s room.
At least one parent is welcome to stay with their child overnight. So, you won’t have to worry about what your child is going through – you can be right there.
Keeping You Informed
Whether you’re talking to your transplant coordinator, our doctors, nurses, child life specialists, or social workers – whomever – we make sure you always know what’s going on and that your questions get answered.
Families often have questions about health insurance. To learn more about health insurance providers and financial assistance, please visit our insurance section.
A Home Away From Home for Out-of-Town Families
If your home is more than 30 miles away from the hospital, you can find another “home away from home” at the Ronald McDonald House, located just across the street from Nemours Children's Clinic, Jacksonville. There, families can rest and recuperate so they can be at their very best for their child.
The House includes private guest rooms (each with a bathroom, phone, and TV), computers with high-speed internet access, an exercise room, TV/recreation rooms, a kitchen, and outdoor playgrounds. At night, volunteers prepare a hot meal for the families. Family activities, such as Bingo, arts and crafts, are also provided.
Helping Your Child Keep up With School
If you have a school-aged child getting a stem cell transplant, we even offer an on-site school teacher to make sure your child doesn’t fall behind. Operated by the local Duval County School District, our in-hospital school is staffed by professional teachers who will come to your child’s room.
Your transplant coordinator and teacher will also work together to arrange a smooth transition of school services, communicating with your child’s school in order to continue your child’s educational program when you return home.
