At the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (NCCBD), we offer a family-friendly program emphasizing supportive care and comfort, as well as top-of-the-line treatment for all types of childhood cancers and blood disorders. Our goal is to help families like yours throughout the course of your child’s care, providing the resources and education you need to leave the hospital well-prepared for your child’s ongoing treatment.

At Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (AIDHC), our versatile and comprehensive Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant (BBMT) program provides a number of therapies doctors can use to tailor the best treatment for each child.

We coordinate the whole process, from start to finish, including:

  • medical evaluation (which includes testing before the transplant)
  • insurance coverage for transplant
  • the transplantation process
  • post-transplant care

Pooling our resources from throughout our health system, through NCCBD we've expanded our research efforts and expertise to continue Nemours’ mission of providing family-centered care, safety, and quality of life for our patients.

Home Away From Home

Multicolor floors and playful animal wallpaper color the corridors of our inpatient units. Each unit houses a play area/lounge with games, color TV, toys, books, tables, couches, highchairs, and a computer. Kids’ rooms are equipped with a bathroom, a bulletin board to display cards or artwork, and a color TV. At least one parent is usually welcome to stay with their child overnight. So, you won’t have to worry about what your child is going through – you can be right there.

The 3A BBMT unit is designed to be a self-contained and safe environment for patients and families. Our many amenities include:

  • a recently renovated family room with a TV, internet access, and a soothing environment for family to relax outside the child’s room
  • an exercise room for family members, equipped with a treadmill, elliptical, and exercise bike
  • a kitchen stocked with basic food items as well as cooking and refrigerator space for each patient and family
  • a physical therapy gym so patients can receive therapy without leaving the unit
  • patient rooms, all equipped with a private bathroom and shower as well as space for a family member to sleep

And our new Family Resource Center and Ronald McDonald Family Room (decorated in soothing earth tones with twinkling lights to mimic a starlit sky) allows our families to enjoy some of the comforts of home, just a few short steps away from their child’s bedside. This area features:

  • a laundry facility
  • showers
  • a kitchenette
  • a library with books, periodicals, and DVDs
  • a business center with a copier, fax machine, computers, and printers
  • three sleep rooms, equipped with a full-size bed and comfortable furniture, giving parents with the most critically ill children a peaceful respite from hospital life

The Family Resource Center and Ronald McDonald Family Room was a joint project between the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, located right next across from the hospital’s campus.

Although at least one parent is usually welcome to stay in our comfortable rooms with their child overnight (using one of our in-room cots) families of chronically or seriously ill children who live more than 25 miles away from the hospital can find another “home away from home” at the Ronald McDonald House, if necessary. There, families can rest and recuperate so they can be at their very best for their sick child.

The House includes private guest rooms (each with a bathroom, phone, and TV), computers with high-speed internet, a media room, a fitness center, playrooms, a teen room, a kitchen, a library, and outdoor playgrounds. At night, volunteers prepare a hot meal for all of the families. And those staying over the weekend get breakfast. Families are asked to donate $15 for each night, however (like Nemours) the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware doesn’t turn away any family that can’t pay.

Keeping You Informed

Whether you’re talking to your transplant coordinator, our doctors, nurses, child life specialists, social workers – whomever – we make sure you always know what’s going on and that your questions get answered.

To help you stay on top of the details of your child’s care even more, we offer MyNemours - a secure internet portal that allows you to view select areas of your electronic medical record currently maintained by Nemours. You can access these records any time, day or night, from anywhere - schedule appointments, read customized educational content fron KidsHealth.org, and get your child's medications refilled online. And it's secure, confidential - and free.

Our Very Own School

If you have a school-aged child getting a stem cell transplant, we even offer an on-site school teacher to make sure your child doesn’t fall behind. Operated by the local Brandywine School District, our in-hospital school is staffed by professional teachers who will come to your child’s room.

When preparing for a stem cell transplant, your child’s regular school and the hospital’s teacher will work together to develop a personalized education plan for your child that can be used during the hospital.

Your transplant coordinator and teacher will also work together to arrange a smooth transition of school services. They’ll communicate with your child’s regular school in order to continue your child’s educational program when you return home.
