Doctors:

Doctors and members of our Division of Hematology/Oncology diagnose and treat children with a broad range of childhood cancers (oncology). Our team coordinates your child’s ongoing care with your child’s primary care physician.

To provide the best, state-of-the-art care for kids who require hospitalization, your child’s cancer care team works closely with the staff at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, connected to our clinic building by KidsWalk, an enclosed, elevated walkway.

From the start, the caring, sympathetic experts from our Division of Psychology and Psychiatry make sure you and your child understand what’s happening throughout the journey and help you cope with the diagnosis and the effects of the disease and treatment. Psychological services may include “neurocognitive testing” – to look for any learning problems that may be related to treatment and address them as early as possible. Psychotherapy, either in the hospital or at Nemours, is also available to help your child adjust to treatment, manage pain, comply with taking medications, and cope with depression and anxiety.

And our participation in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), an international organization that conducts research to identify cancer causes and pioneer promising new treatments and cures for childhood cancer, allows us to offer your child the best care available. Our staff members are also actively involved in clinical research to develop new treatments.

We also support our patients and their families with a wide range of services, including financial aid and support groups. We hold special clinics for long-term follow-up of children with cancer as well.

Our Very Own School

If you have a school-aged child getting a stem cell transplant, we even offer an on-site school teacher to make sure your child doesn’t fall behind. Operated by the local Duval County School District, our in-hospital school is staffed by professional teachers who will come to your child’s room.

When preparing for a stem cell transplant, your child’s regular school and the hospital’s teacher will work together to develop a personalized education plan for your child that can be used during the hospital stay.

Your transplant coordinator and teacher will also work together to arrange a smooth transition of school services. They’ll communicate with your child’s regular school in order to continue your child’s educational program when you return home.

Blood and Bone Marrow Transplants

Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville is also one of a select group of institutions in the country with a blood and bone marrow transplant program accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT). Children diagnosed with leukemia and many other life-threatening diseases can be treated with a stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant. Doctors inject these cells during the transplant process to replace a child’s defective or damaged cells in order to treat different types of cancers and blood diseases.

The Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation Program is a unique collaboration between Nemours Children’s Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Wolfson Children’s Hospital. The children’s inpatient unit is located at nearby Wolfson Children’s Hospital – that’s where the actual transplants take place. But Nemours’ team of caregivers provide kids’ care before and after the procedure. So a whole team of doctors and staff members at each location is looking out for the best interests of your child.
