Families from throughout the region, across the country and around the world come to the renowned Nemours Cardiac Center. Our state-of-the-art pediatric heart center is located within Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. We provide comprehensive pediatric cardiovascular care for children with the simplest to the most complex conditions, with a family-centered approach. Our Nemours Cardiac Center outcomes and quality measures are among the best in the nation, which gives children and infants with congenital and acquired heart conditions the best chance for a long and fulfilling life.

With services centered at duPont Hospital for Children, we also offer cardiology care and follow-ups at Nemours duPont Pediatrics locations throughout the tri-state area (Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey). In addition, our Nemours Cardiac Center physicians provide consultative services at affiliated hospitals around the region. And our Nemours Kids Transport team can bring your child here right away from any hospital or medical facility in the region.

World-Class Cardiac Center Care

The Nemours Cardiac Center was designed to provide a singular focus on the care of children with heart disease. From the physicians and staff to the physical structure, every part of our heart center is designed to facilitate seamless, outstanding care. All of the inpatient care areas — including cardiac operating suites — are in close proximity and used exclusively for cardiac patients. This arrangement allows for smooth transfers of patients from one care area to another, ready communication between care teams, and easy navigation by families who are rooming (staying overnight) in the Nemours Cardiac Center.

At the Nemours Cardiac Center, we provide comprehensive cardiac evaluations and inpatient and outpatient services. We offer first-class pediatric heart surgery as well as modern, nonsurgical and combination treatment approaches. Our Nemours Cardiac Center experts have become leaders in minimizing the number of pediatric heart surgeries our young patients need.

Specializing in complex heart surgery for congenital (present at birth) heart defects, we use techniques and advances that help babies and children avoid the trauma and recovery time of open-heart surgery. And our heart center’s treatment options improve the outlook for scores of children — with less discomfort and shorter hospital stays.

Specialized Heart Center Care With Excellent Outcomes

The Nemours Cardiac Center’s highly skilled, dedicated team of cardiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensive care doctors, advanced practice nurses (APNs), physician assistants (PAs), direct care nurses and ancillary staff are all focused on taking care of children with heart disease. So you’ll know your child is getting specialized attention and being treated by true experts experienced in the field. This specialization results in excellent outcomes across the spectrum of pediatric cardiac disease.

Award-Winning Heart Center Care

Ranked among the nation’s best in pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery by U.S. News & World Report, the Nemours Cardiac Center is also one of only a few pediatric heart centers in the country recognized as an Accredited Heart Failure Institute by the Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium. And our physicians are often named, year after year, as some of the Best Doctors in America®.

Leading the Way in Electronic Health Records

Nemours is an acknowledged leader in the use of computer technology to store health information. Nemours is among the elite 1 percent of U.S. hospitals to have implemented the electronic health record (EHR) and to have received the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Stage 7 Award in 2011 for reaching the highest level of EHR adoption.

Our physicians can view records from anywhere through a virtually paperless, efficient system that respects confidentiality and protects privacy. Our EHR makes past medical history — including test results, medications and allergies — immediately available to physicians and other providers, decreasing the chance for error and duplication of tests.

As a parent or guardian, MyNemours is your secure, personalized, online access to select areas of your child’s medical record, including test results. It’s also your key to direct, confidential electronic communication with your child’s Nemours medical providers.

Comprehensive, Fully Integrated Pediatric Care

Offering inpatient and outpatient services across more than 30 pediatric specialties, duPont Hospital for Children is also a teaching hospital that provides all of the specialties of pediatric medicine, surgery and dentistry in a welcoming environment. Working together to train the next generation of physicians, we’re academically affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University’s Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and the University of Delaware.

As the only verified Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in the state of Delaware, duPont Hospital for Children also is the first stop for sick and severely injured children in the tri-state area.

Serene, Convenient Cardiac Center Care

Nestled among 300 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, lush lawns and fresh air, our world-class pediatric heart center is closer than you may think. Convenient to I-95, we’re located about 45 minutes from Philadelphia and Camden, N.J., 90 minutes from Baltimore, and 2.5 hours from both Washington and New York City.

And when you come to the Nemours Cardiac Center, you’ll never have to worry about getting through downtown traffic or driving around to find a pricey parking spot. Parking is free here — we even offer free valet service.

Our Cardiac Center Facility

Our state-of-the-art heart center at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children features the:

Cardiac Center Intensive Care Unit

The Nemours Cardiac Center’s 14-bed cardiac intensive care unit (or “CICU”) offers a full complement of specialists and equipment to monitor your child and adjust treatment at all times. The CICU is where children stay who are very sick, need close monitoring, or recently had open-heart or chest (“cardiothoracic”) surgery or a heart transplant.

Nursing care is provided 24 hours a day at your child’s bedside. And nurses typically have only one or two patients to care for in the CICU.

The CICU is considered an “open unit” — parents may enter 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Inpatient Care Unit

Located in the “2B” area, our heart center’s 15-bed regular inpatient unit (sometimes called the “Step-Down Unit”) is for children who require less intensive care. Our private rooms are equipped to create a home away from home and to accommodate two parents rooming in with their child at all times.

Some children will leave this unit within 24 hours; others will spend several weeks on the unit. This is a “telemetry unit,” which means all patients’ heart rhythms are monitored.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit

The three-bed post anesthesia care unit (“PACU,” located in 2B) at the Nemours Cardiac Center is where children go to recover after a procedure. After procedures, you’re allowed to be with your child as soon as possible.

The PACU (also called the “Recovery Area”) is for patients admitted to the hospital for procedures requiring anesthesia (patients are admitted for cardiac catheterizations, sedated echocardiograms, electrophysiology studies, MRIs, CT scans and general surgical procedures).

Patients in the PACU are carefully monitored and cared for by registered nurses under the direction of our pediatric cardiologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs).

Cardiac Center Operating Room

At the Nemours Cardiac Center, we have our own operating room (or “OR”), used exclusively for pediatric cardiothoracic (heart and chest) surgery. Our heart center operating room, used exclusively for pediatric cardiac surgery, is staffed by a highly skilled team of pediatric:

  • cardiothoracic surgeons (who specialize in operating on children’s hearts and chests)
  • cardiac operating room (OR) nurses
  • anesthesiologists (who work exclusively in the Nemours Cardiac Center to keep children safe and comfortable during and after procedures and surgery)
  • perfusionists (who are responsible for the heart-lung machine)
  • cardiologists (heart doctors)

The OR uses advanced technology, including a monitor system that allows other physicians and nurses outside the OR to watch the procedure via a small camera mounted to the surgeon’s headlight (which allows the whole surgical care team to monitor every child's procedure to make the best it can be).

Catheterization & Electrophysiology Suite

Our advanced Cardiac Catheterization Lab (also called the “Cath Lab”) at the Nemours Cardiac Center allows us to offer a special place where our pediatric cardiologists can perform around-the-clock diagnostic and interventional (treatment) catheterizations designed for pediatric cardiac care.

Cardiac catheterization is performed by inserting a thin plastic, flexible tube (called a “catheter”) into an artery and vein that lead to the heart. Cardiac catheterization (sometimes also called “heart catheterization”) is done under sedation with local anesthesia or under general anesthesia, depending on your child’s age and condition. A cardiac catheterization is completely painless — our pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists will make sure your child is comfortable throughout the procedure.

An electrophysiology study (or “EPS”) looks at how well the heart’s electrical signals are working. It’s used to check for abnormal heartbeats or heart rhythms.

Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology suite is always available for any child who needs our services.

Cardiac Outpatient Services

Our kid-friendly outpatient offices will serve as your home base for your child’s heart care needs. In our heart center’s Outpatient Services area, we see infants, kids, teens and expectant mothers (of unborn babies with possible congenital heart defects):

  • diagnosis
  • testing
  • preoperative (before surgery) appointments
  • postoperative (after surgery) follow-ups
  • preventive cardiology care (screening and ongoing care for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes and obesity)

Our vibrant waiting area offers activities and computers to help keep your child occupied.

During your outpatient clinic visit, your child can expect to:
  • have “vitals” checked by a cardiac center medical assistant or nurse (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, height)
  • get a physical examination from the cardiologist
  • get recommended diagnostic tests (during your visit or at your convenience)
  • learn about your child’s condition
  • find out what to expect from treatment
  • meet other Nemours Cardiac Center team members
  • get a tour if your child needs a procedure or to be hospitalized

Exercise Lab

Our Exercise Lab is located inside the Nemours Cardiac Center’s Outpatient Services office. Here, care team members called “exercise physiologists” conduct cardiopulmonary exercise tests (also known as, “exercise tests” or “stress tests”), which can include myocardial perfusion imaging (also called “MPI scan” or “Cardiolite testing,” done in conjunction with an exercise stress test).

Exercise tests are performed by using sticky discs and wires to connect your child to an electrocardiogram machine while exercising on a stationary bike or treadmill. The information is transferred to a computer, where it’s stored and printed as a graph for interpretation by a pediatric cardiologist.

Echo Lab

In the Echo Lab, located inside the Nemours Cardiac Center’s Outpatient Services area, we can perform echocardiography (or “echo”), a specialized form of ultrasound that uses sound waves to build a picture of your child’s heart (an “echocardiogram).

Family-Centered Spaces, Services & Amenities

Caring for a child with a heart problem can be very stressful for families. Every phase of our heart center treatment and hospitalization is intended to keep you near your child — and to take some of the anxiety and fear out of the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation process. At the Nemours Cardiac Center, we want you and your family to be as comfortable as possible at every point of your child’s journey. We strive to address your physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs so you can focus on helping your child get well.

Staying Here Overnight

Private Inpatient Rooms

Our family-friendly rooms in our main inpatient care units (in an area we call “2B”) include a large private bathroom, telephone, flat-screen TV and DVD player. Private rooms with sleeping accommodations for two adults allow you to remain at your child’s inpatient unit bedside. The 2B inpatient care unit also has a playroom for patients and siblings, as well as a kitchen and appliances for patients and their parents.

Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

Parents, family and friends are not allowed to sleep at the bedside while their child is in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). However, for children who are admitted to the CICU, we will make every effort to provide a private room (on 2B) for the two adults who are taking care of the child so that you can be available, day and night, when your child needs you the most. If there are no available rooms on 2B, our social worker can help to find options for you to stay in or near the hospital. Unfortunately, due to times of high patient volume, it is possible we will need to move parents out of inpatient rooms while their child continues to recover in the CICU.

Family Resource Center

If you need a place to relax, unwind or just take a moment for yourself during your child’s hospitalization, visit the Family Resource Center and Ronald McDonald Family Room, located on the third floor of the hospital. Thanks to this joint project of duPont Hospital for Children and the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, you can enjoy 24/7 access to:

  • kitchenette with microwave to make snacks or a light meal
  • laundry facilities
  • computers
  • telephones (with free long distance)
  • fax machine
  • copier
  • printers
  • free Internet access and wireless service
  • low-cost vending machines
  • library with books and periodicals from the Auxiliary
  • comfortable bathroom and shower facilities
  • three quiet sleep rooms (reserve by contacting the social worker assigned to your child’s unit)

The Family Resource Center also features an education area, available by appointment, where you can learn skills necessary to care for your child’s special medical needs.

Ronald McDonald House

Located across the street from the hospital, the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware has 50 guest rooms and amenities to provide families from outside the area a very affordable “home away from home” — a safe, comfortable environment where families can interact, receive support and comfort one another.

  • eCards (create an email card that will be printed, folded, sealed and delivered to your child by a Nemours representative 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday)

Laptop Lending Program

Staying connected to friends and family is important during a hospital stay. If you don’t have your own laptop computer, you can feel free to borrow one while your child’s staying with us overnight — thanks to KINfolk, a nonprofit organization that provides free laptops to hospitalized children across the country. (Although we do lend to parents, we give priority to kid users.)

To reserve a laptop during your child’s hospital stay, just ask your social worker or nurse for more information. Your family ambassador may also fill out the request, if you ask, after your child is admitted. Parents also are welcome to call the volunteer office and leave a laptop request message. Just call 53-5785 from a hospital phone.

Emotional Support & Healing

Child Life, Art & Music Therapy Programs

The Child Life program helps to normalize the hospital environment by addressing the emotional, psychosocial and developmental needs your child and family may have throughout hospitalization. Child Life promotes effective coping through play, self-expression activities and age-appropriate medical preparation and education to promote positive coping and help your family adjust to the hospital experience.

To do this, Child Life specialists provide:
  • education about how to cope with illness and hospitalization
  • emotional support during medical procedures
  • developmentally appropriate explanations to your child about the sequence, nature and reasons for exams, procedures and surgery
  • education, through medical play, to help your child understand, prepare and appropriately express their feelings
  • support for siblings to help them understand their brother or sister’s hospital stay

Child Life Activity Center

The Child Life Activity Center is available, free of charge, for our patients and families to enjoy. It promotes growth and development, while providing normal play activities. The activity center is maintained by Child Life technicians and volunteers and provides a safe environment for children to play, free of medical staff and procedures. Siblings and visitors under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult while they play.

Art Therapy

Our trained art therapist works with children to help express their emotions through art. Drawing, painting and other projects allow children to express any negative feelings (such as fear, sadness and pain), as well as positive feelings (including hope and love). The nonthreatening environment created by our therapists gives children the feeling of safety needed to express themselves through art. This service is available to children who are currently inpatients.

Music Therapy

Music is an invaluable therapeutic tool. Our trained music therapist helps children express their feelings and emotions through singing and/or listening. It’s been proven that music therapy helps improve mood and decrease anxiety for hospitalized patients. This service is available to children who are currently inpatients (staying with us overnight at the hospital).

Cardiac Center Bead Program

Commemorating the Journey: Child Life works with children in the Cardiac Center to commemorate the courage and boldness of each child undergoing cardiac treatment. Beads are collected to mark each procedure or milestone the patients undertake. Each necklace is intended to be a reflection of the hard work, perseverance and determination of every child who walks through our doors.

Family-Centered Care

The Nemours Cardiac Center has been a pioneer in something called “family-centered care,” which emphasizes collaboration with patients and their families. It also recognizes that families, however they are defined, are essential to a patient’s health and well-being and are allies for quality and safety within our health care system.

We focus on your physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs so you can focus on helping your child get well. Families tell us that the extra care and personal attention they receive from the entire Nemours Cardiac Center team has helped them get through this trying time.

Providing the right environment for our patients and their families is a critical part of successful outcomes. We follow measures of patient and family satisfaction closely to identify areas for improvement and ensure that we’re doing everything we can to put our patients and families at ease.

Here are some of our family-centered offerings:
  • We have an open family visiting policy in the ICU.
  • Parents are able to “room-in” on the inpatient ward with their child.
  • Parents are encouraged to participate with the team on rounds (when the medical care team goes over each child’s care — discussing treatment plans and getting updates from the nursing staff).
  • Patients and families participate in advisory councils (hospital and cardiac) to ensure that their voices are heard.

Families who’ve walked in your shoes may be a source of comfort and information. We also can put you in touch with others who are willing to share their experiences to help offer some insights and support during your child’s diagnosis and treatment.

Healing Touch

Healing Touch is offered for parents or patients while in the hospital. It involves the use of light touch or above-the-body touch for healing and creating calmness and peace. Healing Touch is an energy therapy designed to help the body move towards its highest ability to heal.

Healing Touch is a recognized credentialed nursing education program and is part of the compassionate heart-centered care offered here at duPont Hospital for Children. Healing Touch is a complimentary service that works in conjunction with all traditional Western medicine practices.

Pastoral Care & Nondenominational Chapel

Our pastoral care team of chaplains, volunteers and interns offers spiritual and emotional care for people of all faiths. Or, they can connect you with a faith leader of your choice. Our nondenominational chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to give you, your child and your family a place for respite, prayer, quiet meditation and reflection. Worship services (Interfaith Prayer Service, Protestant Communion Service and Roman Catholic Mass) take place in the chapel several times each week.

Clinical Psychologist

Infants and young children who have surgery, intensive therapy and long hospitalizations may sometimes be delayed in meeting the usual developmental milestones. Early intervention can often prevent long-term problems. That’s why the Nemours Cardiac Center has a full-time pediatric psychologist available to help identify children who may experience developmental delays, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities as a result of a serious heart condition or its treatment. In collaboration with parents and pediatricians, our psychologist provides inpatient and outpatient developmental screening.

Help With Coordinating Your Child's Care

Cardiac Nurse Care Coordinator

As the liaison between patients, families and members of the health care team, the cardiac nurse care coordinator facilitates the continuity of care for patients with complex or long-term health problems.

The nurse care coordinator at the Nemours Cardiac Center:
  • assists with transition and discharge planning
  • identifies patient/family needs for further resources
  • initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals
  • reviews preprocedure instructions with patient and family
  • works with the heart center care team to address patients' and families' questions and concerns
  • provides care and support before, during and after hospitalization

Cardiac Social Workers

Cardiac social workers are professionally trained to help children and families who are dealing with difficult situations. They offer counseling and assist with lodging, finances and insurance, as well as link children and families with resources near home.

Nemours Kids Transport

If your child needs to be transported from another hospital to the Nemours Cardiac Center, the Nemours Kids Transport program will get your child here quickly and safely. Our mobile intensive care units provide 24/7 air or ground transportation with an onboard team of pediatric critical care transport specialists who consult with cardiac specialists before and during transport.

We offer comprehensive neonatal and pediatric critical care transport by ground ambulance, helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft. Our fleet of three Nemours-owned ambulances provides door-to-door service for patients who come to duPont Hospital for Children from referring hospitals and other facilities throughout the Delaware Valley.

Functioning as a mobile pediatric intensive care unit, our transport team is specially trained and experienced in the care of children (from birth to age 18) with acute and complex needs and can provide rapid response for medical transports at all times.

Our doctors are available for consultative care as soon as we receive a request for our services. Health care personnel from our hospital will work together with the contacting hospital or health care facility to plan your child’s care.

ECMO Transport

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is the only hospital in the region with an ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (or “ECMO”) transport program. ECMO is a treatment for serious problems of the heart or lungs (or both). It’s used when the heart or lungs are too sick to work like they should and all other treatments to help them work better have been tried. ECMO can give the lungs and heart time to rest and heal.

This may help to understand ECMO:
  • “ExtraCorporeal” means treatment that takes place outside the body.
  • “Membrane” means a type of artificial lung.
  • “Oxygenation” means supplying oxygen to the blood.

We provide extracorporeal life support services for critically ill newborns, babies, kids and teens. In a unique arrangement, Nemours physicians can see patients for ECMO evaluation on-site at the referring hospital, a helpful option when the patient is unstable and may be at high risk for complications during transport. Pending evaluation, the Nemours ECMO transport team can place an unstable patient on ECMO at the referring hospital and transport the child to duPont Hospital for Children in a stabilized condition for as long as needed.

School Program for Hospitalized Children

If you have a school-aged child who will be staying at the hospital for at least 10 days, or who will be missing school for a few weeks, our certified teachers will work with you, your child’s school teacher (or homebound teacher) and other members of your care team to create an appropriate lesson plan based on your child’s abilities and needs.

Education sessions can then take place either right at your child’s bedside or in our hospital classroom, during normal school days and hours. The length of the sessions depends on many things, including your child’s health and emotional well-being.

Learn More About Our School Program »

Transplant Coordinator

The dedicated transplant coordinator (or “TC”) helps families while they await a heart transplant with any preoperative (also called, “pre-op”) testing and prepariations for surgery. After the transplant, the TC can help patients with medications, coordinate follow-up visits, and help with community resources.

Your Surgical Home

Children with heart abnormalities are, after all, regular kids who may need regular kid procedures such as ear tubes and tonsillectomies, hernia repairs, eye surgery, treatment for broken bones, MRI tests, etc. The Nemours Cardiac Center anesthesiologists are available to provide anesthesia or sedation for these procedures, using their knowledge and experience to provide the special care that children with heart conditions need.

Our “surgical home” program allows the child’s parent, surgeon or other specialist doctor to contact our cardiac anesthesia scheduler who will take it from there, coordinating:

  • the day and time of surgery
  • preprocedure testing
  • admission for the day of the procedure
  • a plan for recovery and discharge

All of the before- and after-procedure care takes place within the Nemours Cardiac Center by the cardiac center nurses, therapists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are experts with cardiac patients and, in many cases, are familiar faces to the child and family.

Heart Center Care Across Our Community

Cardiac evaluations and outpatient care from the Nemours Cardiac Center experts at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children also are available at offices throughout the Delaware Valley — offering heart center care that’s convenient for you. Nemours duPont Pediatrics is our network of outpatient practices that provides access to high-quality cardiology care for families in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

We also collaborate with many of the region’s hospitals and health systems to bring our pediatric heart center skills and expertise to a greater number of children throughout our community — making it easier for families who need our help to get the top-notch pediatric cardiology care they need.

Outpatient Cardiac Services

In addition to our outpatient clinic at duPont Hospital for Children, our pediatric cardiologists from the Nemours Cardiac Center go to Nemours duPont Pediatrics offices throughout the tri-state area.

All of our satellite locations accept new, follow-up and postoperative appointments for:
  • babies (including newborns)
  • kids
  • teens
  • expectant mothers (of unborn babies with possible congenital heart defects)
We offer the following at all of the Cardiac Center’s satellite offices:

(see Nemours duPont Pediatrics Outpatient Services Locations below)

Common Cardiac Symptoms We See

Our pediatric cardiologists are experts in diagnosing and treating congenital heart defects. Children are commonly referred to our Nemours duPont Pediatrics outpatient offices for the evaluation of:

  • heart murmurs (noises that occur as blood flows through the heart — some murmurs are heard in children with normal hearts, others may indicate a structural abnormality that may or may not be serious)
  • chest pain
  • fast heartbeat
  • rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias/abnormal heart rhythms and palpitations/irregular heartbeat)
  • cyanosis (blue coloration)
  • fainting

Preventive Cardiology Appointments

Pinpointing and addressing possible problems early on can keep kids from having bigger health issues (such as strokes, heart attacks and heart disease) as adults. That’s why Nemours preventive cardiology experts evaluate and offer guidance for kids of all ages dealing with conditions that could put them at risk for heart issues (especially atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries) including:

  • weight problems or obesity
  • high blood pressure (also called hypertension)

Our experts can perform a complete cardiovascular risk evaluation and, if your child is at risk, develop a personalized management plan that includes practical ways (such as changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle) to reduce your child’s likelihood of future cardiovascular disease. Fetal Cardiac Testing & Follow-Ups

If you’re pregnant and your doctor suspects your baby may have a possible heart problem, we also offer fetal diagnostic cardiology services and consultations for expectant parents through our Nemours Partners for Perinatal Management Program.

As early as the 18th week of pregnancy, we can perform fetal echocardiography (or “fetal echos”) — an in-depth cardiac ultrasound study that allows us to view the structure, function and rhythm of a baby’s heart while still in the womb. If we detect a heart defect, we’ll help you understand your baby’s condition, coordinate consultations with one of our pediatric cardiologists, and plan for any necessary treatment at or soon after birth.

Our Nemours Cardiac Center pediatric cardiologists offer fetal echos and follow-up consultation (to help you prepare for treatment after your baby’s birth) at our Nemours duPont Pediatrics locations in:
