Cardiology (Heart Care)

tiny cardiology patient with breathing tubes

Most children with a heart condition are born with a congenital heart defect (when their heart didn’t develop normally or completely in the early weeks of pregnancy). So the sooner kids can get diagnosed and treated, if needed, the better.
When little hearts need help and families need hope, Nemours’ experienced, caring pediatric cardiology teams are there.

Read More About Pediatric Cardiology

No matter what kind of heart problem your child has or where you live, our teams of pediatric cardiology experts use the latest, most advanced technologies to diagnose and treat children of all ages with all kinds of pediatric heart disease, from the mild to the extremely complex. We specialize in early detection and repair, so that your child will have the best possible chance for a healthy future.

Nemours’ pediatric cardiology specialists are convinced that virtually all forms of childhood heart disease, even the most unusual and complicated, can be treated. We work together with everyone involved in your child’s health, whether it’s members of our own pediatric cardiology team, other Nemours specialists, your primary care physician or pediatrician, or other health care providers. We make sure everyone’s on the same page so that your child can get the most efficient and highest quality care.

We also believe in a strong partnership with the families we see. Our team might know your child’s heart, but only you know your child best. We want you to be an active participant in the decision-making process. That’s why we take the time to: explain the diagnosis and treatment in understandable terms, present all of the options, and invite your family’s input for creating the right treatment plan for your child.

No matter what kind of heart problem your child might have, we’re here to offer comprehensive, compassionate pediatric cardiology care and to partner with your family, guiding you every step of the way.

Our experienced, board-certified pediatric cardiologists from the Nemours Cardiac Center at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., come here to our pediatric specialty care office in Newtown Square to provide convenient heart care for children in your area. It’s our way of extending our renowned pediatric cardiology care to you — where and when you need it.

Your Local Access to Our Nationally Recognized Excellence

Here at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Newtown Square, we see babies, kids and teens for appointments ranging from initial consultations to diagnostic testing to surgical follow-ups.

If you’re pregnant and your doctor suspects your baby may have a possible heart problem, we also offer fetal diagnostic cardiology services and consultations for expectant parents. As early as the 18th week of the pregnancy, we can perform fetal echocardiography (fetal “echo”) — an in-depth cardiac ultrasound study that allows us to view the structure, function, and rhythm of a baby’s heart while still in the womb. If we detect a heart defect, we’ll help you understand your baby’s condition, coordinate consultations with one of our pediatric cardiologists, and plan for any necessary treatment at or soon after the birth.

When you see any of our pediatric cardiologists for any reason, know that you’ll get the very best in heart care for kids. Our pediatric cardiologists are part of duPont Hospital for Children — ranked among the nation’s best in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report.

Our Pediatric Cardiology Services

If your child’s appointment is for an initial consultation, you may have been referred to us by your primary care or pediatricians’ office for evaluation of these common symptoms:

  • heart murmurs
  • chest pain
  • fast heartbeat
  • palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
  • cyanosis (blue coloration)
  • fainting

We also provide follow-up evaluation for children with known heart problems and for kids who’ve undergone heart surgery or heart transplantation. If your child needs tests, such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or echocardiography (echo), we’ll perform them at the time of the visit — and we’ll give you the results immediately after these tests are completed. If your child needs it, we also offer specialized remote monitoring, so we can monitor your child’s heart rhythm from your own home.

Compassionate Pediatric Cardiology Care

Whatever your child’s heart condition and wherever you see one of our pediatric cardiologists, we’ll do everything within our power to give you comprehensive, compassionate heart care. We’ll give your child a swift diagnosis and, if needed, treatment — right when it matters the most.
