Cardiology (Heart Care)

tiny cardiology patient with breathing tubes

Most children with a heart condition are born with a congenital heart defect (when their heart didn’t develop normally or completely in the early weeks of pregnancy). So the sooner kids can get diagnosed and treated, if needed, the better.
When little hearts need help and families need hope, Nemours’ experienced, caring pediatric cardiology teams are there.

Read More About Pediatric Cardiology

No matter what kind of heart problem your child has or where you live, our teams of pediatric cardiology experts use the latest, most advanced technologies to diagnose and treat children of all ages with all kinds of pediatric heart disease, from the mild to the extremely complex. We specialize in early detection and repair, so that your child will have the best possible chance for a healthy future.

Nemours’ pediatric cardiology specialists are convinced that virtually all forms of childhood heart disease, even the most unusual and complicated, can be treated. We work together with everyone involved in your child’s health, whether it’s members of our own pediatric cardiology team, other Nemours specialists, your primary care physician or pediatrician, or other health care providers. We make sure everyone’s on the same page so that your child can get the most efficient and highest quality care.

We also believe in a strong partnership with the families we see. Our team might know your child’s heart, but only you know your child best. We want you to be an active participant in the decision-making process. That’s why we take the time to: explain the diagnosis and treatment in understandable terms, present all of the options, and invite your family’s input for creating the right treatment plan for your child.

No matter what kind of heart problem your child might have, we’re here to offer comprehensive, compassionate pediatric cardiology care and to partner with your family, guiding you every step of the way.

Nemours Children’s Hospital (NCH), provides a comprehensive array of pediatric cardiology services for children with congenital (present at birth) cardiac conditions and acquired heart disease ranging from the most common, to the extremely complex.

Pediatric Cardiology Care at Its Very Best

At NCH, we know that it’s often the tiniest hearts that need the most help — from the very start. So we’ve assembled a highly experienced care team with state-of-the-art technologies, all dedicated to providing advanced specialty care to children and families in Central Florida, and throughout the Southeast.

Your Nemours Cardiac Care Team

Our inpatient and outpatient pediatric cardiology teams work every day to provide the most up-to-date care available to children with heart problems. We bring together experienced specialists and care providers, including:

  • board-certified pediatric cardiologists (children’s heart doctors)
  • cardiology nurses and nurse specialists
  • certified cardiac sonographers
  • social workers

Our NCH pediatric cardiology team also works closely with other specialists your child may need. And we’ll keep your primary care physician or pediatrician fully up-to-date on the care plan for your child.

Common Pediatric Heart Conditions We Treat

NCH was specifically designed by our cardiology medical staff and our family advisory members to deliver comprehensive care to our children and families. Our diagnostic, treatment, and recovery areas are seamlessly connected, spacious, modern, and equipped with technology that’s perfectly sized for infants, children, and teens with heart problems.

Comprehensive Management of Congenital and Acquired
Heart Disease

A majority of children with heart disease have a “congenital” heart defect, or “congenital heart disease,” which is when a baby is born with a heart that didn’t develop normally or completely in the early weeks of pregnancy. But other kids may have something called an “acquired” heart condition, which is when a heart problem develops at some point between infancy and adolescence.

Here at NCH, it’s our goal to diagnose these problems early on so we can develop a plan and begin treatment as soon as possible – even just after your child is born.

Noninvasive Diagnostic Testing
We offer a full range of noninvasive pediatric diagnostic imaging services, including:
  • Transthoracic echocardiogram: assesses the heart’s overall health (heart valves and muscles)
  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): creates still and moving pictures of the heart and major blood vessels
  • Cardiac computed tomography (CT): develops a 3-D image of the heart
  • Transesophageal echocardiography: provides a clear image of the heart muscle and other structures
  • Fetal echocardiography: an in-depth study of a baby’s heart while still in the womb
Other noninvasive cardiac diagnostic tests include:
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG): a test that can detect problems with the electrical activity of a child’s heart
  • Holter monitor: a portable EKG that monitors a child’s heart activity for 24 hours
  • Cardiac event monitoring: a portable monitor that provides continuous heart monitoring and recording over several weeks

Fetal Cardiology Evaluation

Many children with critical heart disease are diagnosed before birth or soon after. Thanks to our skilled team and advanced fetal cardiac diagnostic technology, most children who are born with a heart
condition — even newborns only hours old — can be evaluated and treated right away.

Called a fetal echocardiogram (or fetal “echo”) — this imaging technology provides an in-depth cardiac ultrasound study that allows us to view the structure, function, and rhythm of a baby’s heart while still in the womb.

Working with your family obstetrician or maternal-fetal medicine specialist (a doctor who specializes in high-risk pregnancies), our pediatric cardiac team will find out what’s going on inside your baby’s tiny heart, and most importantly, develop a treatment plan early, to save precious time after your child is born.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Heart disease in children often has long-term, far-reaching effects.
Our pediatric cardiology team is here to help your child and family understand, cope with, and manage your child’s heart condition today, tomorrow, and beyond.

The pediatric cardiac rehabilitation program at NCH helps us identify potential complications and take steps to improve your child’s quality of life through:

  • ongoing screening, assessment, and intervention
  • information and education about your child’s pediatric heart condition and treatment
  • support for long-term health and wellness, including healthy eating and activity
  • collaboration with occupational, physical, and speech/language therapy as needed
  • and much more

Sports Physicals: Focusing on Heart Health

Kids who play sports are healthy and physically fit, but overexertion can stress the heart and worsen an undetected heart condition. At Nemours Children’s Hospital, trained pediatric cardiology specialists provide comprehensive heart evaluations for athletes before they hit the track, field, or court — helping to ensure safe game play.

Our pediatric heart evaluations generally include:
  • a thorough medical review
  • complete cardiovascular physical exam
  • electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

And, depending on your child’s symptoms or condition, your pediatric cardiologist may also order cardiovascular imaging (echocardiogram, MRI, CT, etc.), cardiac event monitoring, or lab tests.

Advanced Pediatric Medical Imaging Services Available Onsite

If your child needs medical imaging, we offer some of the area’s most advanced pediatric radiology services here on campus at Nemours
Children’s Hospital.

Our unique services include:
  • interventional radiology: Our team of experts uses image guidance to diagnose and treat diseases and tumors throughout the body. Certain conditions that previously required open surgery can now be treated by Nemours pediatric interventional radiologists. We are very fortunate to have the only dual-trained pediatric diagnostic and interventional radiologist in the state.
  • neuroradiological or cardiovascular imaging, and fetal MRI (magnetic resonance imaging): Our subspecialty-trained pediatric radiologists see children with complex conditions who require this highly specialized imaging.
  • Central Florida’s only 256-slice Brilliance iCT Scanner: We are one of only a handful of children’s hospitals in the country to have this latest generation CAT (or CT) scanner that scans faster than most machines and produces excellent images in a much shorter time with much less radiation exposure for the child.

Our team of board-certified pediatric radiologists and pediatric radiologic technologists are experts in the safe medical imaging of children of every age, even newborns.

We have also pledged our commitment to the “Image Gently” campaign of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, which is increasing awareness of the opportunities to promote radiation protection in the imaging of children.
