Cardiology (Heart Care)

tiny cardiology patient with breathing tubes

Most children with a heart condition are born with a congenital heart defect (when their heart didn’t develop normally or completely in the early weeks of pregnancy). So the sooner kids can get diagnosed and treated, if needed, the better.
When little hearts need help and families need hope, Nemours’ experienced, caring pediatric cardiology teams are there.

Read More About Pediatric Cardiology

No matter what kind of heart problem your child has or where you live, our teams of pediatric cardiology experts use the latest, most advanced technologies to diagnose and treat children of all ages with all kinds of pediatric heart disease, from the mild to the extremely complex. We specialize in early detection and repair, so that your child will have the best possible chance for a healthy future.

Nemours’ pediatric cardiology specialists are convinced that virtually all forms of childhood heart disease, even the most unusual and complicated, can be treated. We work together with everyone involved in your child’s health, whether it’s members of our own pediatric cardiology team, other Nemours specialists, your primary care physician or pediatrician, or other health care providers. We make sure everyone’s on the same page so that your child can get the most efficient and highest quality care.

We also believe in a strong partnership with the families we see. Our team might know your child’s heart, but only you know your child best. We want you to be an active participant in the decision-making process. Pediatric Cardiology Excellence at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Bryn Mawr

Whenever you see any of our pediatric cardiologists at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Bryn Mawr, know that you’ll get the very best in heart care for kids. Our pediatric cardiologists are part of duPont Hospital for Children — ranked among the nation’s best in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report.

At Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Bryn Mawr, we see babies, kids and teens for appointments ranging from initial consultations to diagnostic testing to surgical follow-ups. Our pediatric cardiology services include:

Follow-up evaluations for congenital heart disease (congenital heart defects — present at birth) and acquired (developed later) heart disease. We also offer post-operative follow-ups (for children who’ve undergone heart surgery at duPont Hospital for Children).

Preventive cardiology diagnosis and follow-ups. Our team of pediatric cardiology specialists is committed to keeping your children healthy and helping them live long, disease-free lives. That’s why we focus on the prevention of heart problems that can occur in adults as a result of being overweight or obese, such as high blood pressure, increased cholesterol level, diabetes and coronary artery disease (narrowing of the blood vessels of the heart).

Cardiac diagnostic tests — echocardiography (“echo”), electrocardiogram (also called “EKG” or “ECG”), Holter monitors and ambulatory blood pressure monitors. If your child needs tests, we’ll perform them at the time of the visit — and we’ll give you the results immediately after these tests are completed. We can also offer specialized remote Holter monitoring if your child needs it, allowing us to monitor your child’s heart rhythm from your own home. We offer ambulatory blood pressure monitors as well (which track a child’s blood pressure doing day-to-day life).

Fetal echocardiography (“echo”) testing and follow-ups for expectant parents (to diagnose congenital heart defects during pregnancy). If you’re pregnant and your doctor thinks that your baby may have a heart problem, we also offer fetal diagnostic cardiology services and consultations for expectant parents. From 18 weeks gestation (of pregnancy) on, we can perform fetal echocardiography (fetal “echo”) — an in-depth cardiac ultrasound study that allows us to view the structure, function and rhythm of a baby’s heart while still in the womb. If we discover a heart defect, we’ll help you understand your baby’s condition, coordinate consultations with one of our pediatric cardiologists, and plan for any necessary treatment at or soon after the birth.
