About Pediatric Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine is geared toward healing and caring for the whole child — body, mind and spirit. Pediatric integrative medicine blends traditional and “complementary” or “holistic” medical therapies to help children of all ages feel better physically and emotionally. At Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, our doctors and accredited providers offer a wide variety of evidence-based integrative medicine techniques for children and family members.

Integrative therapies are often prescribed to reduce pain, enhance recovery from intensive treatments (such as cancer treatment and surgery), strengthen the immune system, build resiliency to stress and anxiety, and promote emotional self-management. Integrative medicine also successfully empowers children and families to be a part of the healing process.

Therapies for Healing Mind, Body and Spirit

Nemours uses therapeutic approaches to support the psychological, biological, social and spiritual challenges of illness by helping your child to:

  • control physical and emotional pain
  • relax and find peace
  • reduce stress and anxiety
  • increase movement and exercise
  • nourish the body and mind

Who Can Benefit From Pediatric Integrative Care

Pediatric integrative care is often used in addition to traditional medical care for acute (lasting less than six months) and chronic (lasting more than six months) conditions and treatments related to cancer and blood disorders (bone tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, sickle cell disease, myelodysplastic syndrome), blood and bone marrow transplants, and many other diseases.

Types of Integrative Therapies We Prescribe for Children

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can help children relax and respond to treatment. With guidance from trained practitioners, the aromatic scents of essential oils from flowers, plants and leaves (such as lavender, chamomile and orange) are used to:

  • reduce stress, anxiety, nausea and pain
  • help your child relax
  • encourage sleep
  • increase your child’s appetite

Aromatherapy is often incorporated into Healing Touch and massage therapy sessions.

Healing Touch

Healing Touch is an evidence-based therapeutic service, often provided by a nurse, that uses both gentle touch and nontouch methods to:

  • increase relaxation
  • help relieve pain
  • reduce the stress from clinical services and procedures (such as surgery and cancer treatments)

Used in hospitals throughout the country, this holistic approach to wellness encourages and supports the body’s natural immune system and the ability to heal and feel better.

Hydrotherapy

Also called “aqua therapy,” hydrotherapy uses water pressure and temperature to improve blood flow and circulation to manage pain and promote healing).

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy offers children and their families a soothing, relaxing and calming escape from treatments. A massage therapist may use pleasant-smelling oils, quiet music and/or a light touch to loosen tight muscles and help the blood flow more easily throughout the body.

Meditation

This relaxation technique uses various calming methods to help children create positive thoughts, especially when they fear what’s coming next. These methods include controlled breathing exercises, hypnosis, guided and mental imagery. Children learn to rely on the power of their mind to recall images of a happy event or place.

Nutritional Support

Nutritional support uses healthy eating strategies and natural supplements to nourish overall health and wellness and boost your child’s natural healing process.

Yoga

Yoga can help your child create a positive, healing energy. When we move our bodies mindfully, our brains produce serotonin, a natural “feel-good” hormone. Yoga allows kids of all ages to get in touch with their bodies and discover their inner strength by participating in a series of slow and gentle movements such as stretching and posing. It’s especially beneficial if your child feels depressed, tired or just not up to treatment on some days.
