Pain Management Program Highlights

Our pain management program highlights include:

  • program led by one of the world’s top pain specialists — a pain management expert who’s  board-certified in pediatric anesthesiology and provides compassionate care for children with the most complex needs
  • a program developed by medical doctors who led internationally recognized pain management at children’s hospitals across the country
  • one of only a few pediatric pain management programs in the United States that also provides healing for the entire family
  • personalized pain management services offered in an outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital setting
  • minimal-medicine treatments such as behavioral/psychological therapy (cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy), rehabilitative therapy (physical and occupational therapy) and integrative medicine (biofeedback, acupuncture, hydrotherapy)
  • inpatient “day-stay” program for children who require more intensive care (a hospital stay that may last several hours over several days, but not overnight)
  • convenient care coordination in which all treatments and therapies take place on the same day during hours that fit your schedule
  • weekly meetings to discuss progress and get feedback about how your child feels and any concerns or thoughts you have
  • secure email communication with specialists on your care team through MyNemours electronic health record
  • close contact and partnership with your child’s primary care physician and other specialists your child may see

Your child’s pain can’t wait — that’s why at Nemours, we’re committed to seeing you for outpatient appointments in days, not weeks.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your child’s first appointment will include evaluations with a variety of specialists and may take several hours. Depending on your child’s needs, you can generally expect to meet first with our pediatric anesthesiologist, who will take a complete medical history, perform a medical examination and spend time getting to know you and your child.

Then, you may meet with:

  • behavioral health specialists (who will evaluate your child’s emotional status and your family’s concerns)
  • physical medicine and rehabilitation therapists (who will evaluate your child’s symptoms and need for occupational and/or physical therapy)
  • other disciplines as necessary (neurologists, rheumatologists, gastroenterologists, oncologists, hematologists)
  • social work (who can help coordinate your child’s care and find information, community services, and resources for your child and family)
  • Child Life (who can provide play and creative therapies and distraction)

Your child may also have diagnostic tests and lab work completed while you’re here.

Once we get a complete assessment of what’s causing your child’s pain, our team works to help you understand the treatment options and teach you and your child how to cope with pain at home and at school.

About Pediatric Pain Management

Nemours cares for children with acute pain (temporary or short-term) from an illness, surgery or an injury, or chronic pain (that lasts more than three to six months) from a disease or medical condition. We understand that when a child hurts, everything can suffer — from relationships with friends and family, to learning and behavior at school.

Our pediatric pain management team uses a family-centered approach to develop a balanced pain management plan that’s focused on physical and emotional rehabilitation and whole-child wellness.

Pain in Children and Adolescents

Pain — defined as an unpleasant emotional and sensory experience — is physical and mental, and everyone experiences it differently. Whatever its cause, uncontrolled pain can affect a child’s emotional, physiological and metabolic health which can slow the healing process and increase the risk for chronic pain later in life.

Our goal in managing pain in children is to use the least amount of medicine possible to relieve pain so your child can get back out to play, learn and grow. In addition to medication, we provide minimal-medication and nonmedication therapies to give your child or adolescent more control over pain — and to help reduce the stress and anxiety the pain causes.

Coordinated Pediatric Pain Management at Nemours

It can be difficult for children to describe what they’re feeling. That’s why it’s important to have experienced pediatric specialists engaged in your child’s care. At Nemours, we take the time to get to know your child and find out exactly where it hurts — and how much — so we can help make it better, faster.

Pain Management Care Team Members
  • anesthesiologists (doctors who specialize in general anesthesia, sedation and pain medicines)
  • behavioral health professionals (psychologists and psychiatrists)
  • pain management specialists (doctors and nurses with special training in pain management)
  • physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists (physical and occupational therapists)
  • palliative and supportive care providers (who provide pain medicines)
  • social workers (licensed counselors who offer coping and support that extends to home, school and beyond)
  • Child Life specialists (child development experts who provide play therapy and distraction techniques that help to lessen a child’s perception of pain)
  • pastoral and spiritual care providers (who provide denominational and nondenominational care and support)
  • psychologists (who can help your child cope with ongoing pain)

Other Pediatric Specialists

Depending on your child’s condition, other specialists may be part of the care team, including:

  • gastroenterologists (digestive health)
  • hematologists (blood disorder specialists)
  • immunologists (autoimmune disorder specialists)
  • neurologists (treats brain and central nervous system disorders)
  • oncologists (cancer doctors)
  • orthopedists (bone doctors)
  • rheumatologists (arthritis and rheumatic specialists)

Types of Treatments for Pain Management

Your child’s care team will create a customized treatment plan that may include a combination of inpatient (staying at the hospital) or outpatient treatments and techniques such as those listed below.

Pain Medicine Therapies and Delivery Techniques

  • prescription pain medications (anti-inflammatory medications or opioids that reduce the amount of pain messages sent to the brain)
  • other types of medications (antidepressants or anticonvulsants that are proven to reduce certain types of pain)
  • patient-controlled analgesics, or “PCA” (which deliver medication through a pump when activated by the patient)
  • epidurals (pain medication delivered through a small tube in the lower spine)
  • regional pain blocks (also called “nerve blocks,” which are injections that offer pain relief for specific areas of the body)

Nonmedicine Pain Therapies for Children

  • behavioral health therapy (cognitive behavioral therapy and individual/group therapy to teach healthy ways to cope, think about and react to pain)
  • physical medicine and rehabilitation (physical and occupational therapies to build strength and improve mobility)
  • integrative medicine (mind and body therapies such as acupuncture, nutrition, hydrotherapy, biofeedback, massage, yoga and meditation to promote pain relief and relaxation)

To manage pain, we may also prescribe botulinum toxin injections (short-term therapy to relieve headaches and nerve pain) and infusions of magnesium sulfate (a naturally occurring mineral administered intravenously — through an IV).
