What to Expect

Our services are available while your child is in the hospital, as an outpatient or at home. Based on your child’s condition and your needs and wishes, our approach can include:

  • Consultation Meeting: We schedule time with your child, family and medical team to understand the medical care plan and treatment goals. We can also talk about how you’re feeling, what you need and, most importantly, what your child loves to do so we can devise a plan to help make it happen.
  • Ongoing Knowledge and Education: We can talk about and provide education on many different things, such as how your child might be feeling, symptoms, treatment risks, social issues, family dynamics and more. We can you make informed decisions about your child’s care, treatment and future.
  • Social Work Support: We can help you find assistance from community agencies and resources for your child and family. We also provide support with aspects of living with a chronic medical condition, home care, schooling and other considerations based on your needs.

Patient Testimonials

“A pediatric palliative care program is necessary for the quality of life for a critically ill child and their family. It is imperative to minimize the child's pain, while guiding and nurturing the family during this most difficult time of their lives. An effective palliative care program will reach beyond the walls of the hospital and help sustain the family for years to come."

— Diana, a mother, who (after the loss of her child) championed the effort for the creation of a pediatric palliative care program at duPont Hospital for Children

“We love our team at Nemours and we feel loved by them … Everyone took care of Lucy first then took care of her medical needs. It made a huge difference for our family.”

— Nicole, mother of Lucy, age 3, who had mitochondrial disease (a chronic genetic disorder)
