Your Child’s “Every Day” Diabetes Checklist

Because an emergency can happen anywhere, being prepared is important. Depending on your child’s insulin regimen – injections or insulin pump therapy – the following items should be part of your child’s “Every Day Pack” and carried by you and your child at all times:

  • glucagon emergency kit
  • blood sugar meter and test strips
  • insulin pen or syringes
  • vial of short-acting insulin
  • syringes if using vials or insulin pump and extra batteries and pump supplies
  • alcohol wipes
  • ketone strips (urine or blood)
  • fast-acting carbohydrate sources: 3-4 glucose tablets or gel, small juice box, small box of raisins, or 5 Gummy savers
  • portable snack – cheese crackers or granola bar
  • current list of all insulin: carbohydrate ratios, correction factor
  • extra batteries for your meter
  • emergency phone numbers
  • CalorieKing book

When your child has been diagnosed with Type 1 (previously known as juvenile diabetes) or Type 2 diabetes, you want the best possible care and treatments. Although you would probably travel almost anywhere to make sure your child gets the very best care, it’s nice to know it’s available from the pediatric endocrinologists at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Newtown Square, located in the Main Line Health Center.

Our board certified pediatric endocrinologists and others on the Nemours diabetes team, are available every Tuesday and Thursday at our Newtown Square location, to evaluate, diagnose and treat children with diabetes. Also, we offer convenient, onsite services for lab work and testing.

If your child needs more specialized diabetes care, our experts will refer and care for your child to nearby Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, or Nemours duPont Pediatrics at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA.

Helping You and Your Child With Diabetes

In addition to our one-on-one personalized care, we want to make sure your child is comfortable in managing diabetes on a daily basis. A member of our pediatric endocrinology team is available to help you and your child learn how to check and track blood sugar levels throughout the day, offer dietary and nutrition counseling, and provide ongoing support. And, we’ll work with your child’s school nurse and others who care for your child when you’re not around.
