Endocrinology (Hormones & Growth)

Some important factors responsible for the way your child grows, develops, and even feels, depend on how well their endocrine system is working. Endocrine disorders create hormone imbalance that can affect a child's health in many different ways. Our pediatric endocrinologists provide care, treatment, education, and supportive services to children dealing with both common and rare endocrine disorders.

Learn More About Pediatric Endocrinology

Made up of hormone-producing glands, the endocrine system controls many body functions such as growth and development, maturation, energy levels, and mood.

And although Type 1 diabetes — also known as juvenile diabetes — is the most recognizable condition, our experts treat other diseases of the endocrine system such as:

  • puberty disorders: premature (precocious) puberty, delayed puberty
  • growth disorders: short stature (growth failure), growth hormone deficiency

As a parent, you know when it comes to children, balance and moderation is important. While that’s true for most things in life, it’s especially true for how your child’s endocrine system works. Too much or too little of nutrients and hormones in your child’s body can result in an endocrine disorder, which can affect the way your child feels, moves, and grows.

Whether your child’s symptoms are mild or severe, our board certified pediatric endocrinologists at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Newtown Square, located at Main Line Health Center, are experts in recognizing and treating children with all types of endocrine disorders. Our pediatric endocrinology team will assess and evaluate your child’s condition and offer the best treatment solutions to help your child start feeling better again.

If your child’s condition requires specialized care, our experts will refer your child to nearby Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE or Nemours duPont Pediatrics at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA.

What is the Endocrine System?

The endocrine system is important to children’s growth and development. It’s made up of a network of hormone-producing glands that control or regulate different processes within your child’s body such as growth, energy level, mood, puberty, reproduction, and more.

The main glands of the endocrine system include:
  • hypothalamus
  • thyroid
  • pituitary
  • adrenals
  • reproductive
  • pancreas

In order for your child’s body to function, everything needs to be working in harmony – that is, the glands need to secrete just the right amount of hormones throughout the blood stream. When that doesn’t happen, and there’s too much or too little hormones released, it can directly affect your child’s overall health, mood, energy, and growth.
