Limb Length Conditions We Treat at Nemours Children's Hospital

If there’s a deformity in the bone or a limb length discrepancy, our Nemours experts can straighten or lengthen it for kids from birth to age 18. For your convenience, our orthopedic specialists see patients at NCH as well as our other Central Florida satellite Nemours Children’s Specialty Care locations. Conditions we treat include:

  • bowlegs (genu varum, Blount disease) and knock knees (genu valgum)
  • growth plate injuries
  • leg length discrepancy
  • congenital (present at birth) limb deformities (fibula hemimelia, congenital short femur, radial clubhand, etc.)
  • upper extremity deformity (Madelung disease, cubitus varus, multiple hereditary exostoses)
  • short stature (skeletal dysplasias, growth hormone patients)
  • fracture malunions or nonunions

Our Coordinated Limb Length Discrepancy Care Team

The orthopedic surgeons at Nemours Children’s Hospital have a specialized team in place to optimize your child’s orthopedic care and outcomes. From the operating room to radiology, each member of the team is dedicated to bringing advanced diagnostics and treatments to children and teens in Central Florida who are experiencing limb length deformity. In addition to surgical needs, Nemours Children’s Hospital offers physical and rehabilitative medicine on-site and in our Nemours Children’s Specialty Care locations throughout Central Florida.

Pioneering Tools and Techniques for Limb Length Discrepancy

At Nemours, we have the technology and equipment (like Precice® Nails) that can lengthen a limb entirely from the inside. In fact, our specialists helped pioneer “turbo lengthening” for younger children, which combines internal and external fixation and allows the external frame on your child’s arm or leg to be removed in weeks instead of months.

We use advanced techniques to perform arm and leg lengthening and deformity correction as well as reconstruct congenital deformities. For some conditions, such as genu valgum — commonly known as knock knee or genu varum (bow legs) — a small outpatient procedure called guided growth can be used to re-align the limbs.

Advanced Pediatric Medical Imaging Services Available Onsite

If your child needs medical imaging, we offer some of the area’s most advanced pediatric radiology services here on campus at Nemours
Children’s Hospital.

Our unique services include:
  • interventional radiology: Our team of experts uses image guidance to diagnose and treat diseases and tumors throughout the body. Certain conditions that previously required open surgery can now be treated by Nemours pediatric interventional radiologists. We are very fortunate to have the only dual-trained pediatric diagnostic and interventional radiologist in the state.
  • neuroradiological or cardiovascular imaging, and fetal MRI (magnetic resonance imaging): Our subspecialty-trained pediatric radiologists see children with complex conditions who require this highly specialized imaging.
  • Central Florida’s only 256-slice Brilliance iCT Scanner: We are one of only a handful of children’s hospitals in the country to have this latest generation CAT (or CT) scanner that scans faster than most machines and produces excellent images in a much shorter time with much less radiation exposure for the child.

Our team of board-certified pediatric radiologists and pediatric radiologic technologists are experts in the safe medical imaging of children of every age, even newborns.

We have also pledged our commitment to the “Image Gently” campaign of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, which is increasing awareness of the opportunities to promote radiation protection in the imaging of children.
