The term “ortho” means to correct or straighten. At Nemours, our pediatric orthopedic teams recognize and treat neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions as early in your child’s life as possible. We’re here to help restore function and improve kids’ quality of life.

Since 1940, Nemours has been setting the standards for orthopedic procedures for children who were either born with bone, joint, muscular,
and nerve conditions, or who develop these conditions because of disease
or injury.

We welcome all kids with orthopedic problems — from skeletal dysplasia to bone tumors, limb length problems to scoliosis, spinal dysfunction to sports injuries — regardless of how simple or complex their condition (and their care) might be. Our goal is always to improve children’s quality of life — and help kids be kids, no matter what medical condition they’re dealing with.

Whatever pediatric orthopedic condition or injury your child might have, know that we offer comprehensive, compassionate care — and treat every child as we would our own.

What to Expect on Your First Pediatric Orthopedic Visit

Your first trip to any of our pediatric orthopedic centers is usually a comprehensive diagnostic visit. Allow 1 to 2 hours for this visit, which
may include:

  • a thorough review of your child’s medical and family history
  • a review of previous medical records and X-rays
  • a detailed physical examination, including many measurements
  • an assessment of range of joint motions and the relative length of the limb segments

Often, we can give you a specific diagnosis in this initial evaluation. But some conditions can take time to diagnose, so we may need to do further evaluation before we can pinpoint the problem.

What to Expect After Your Pediatric Orthopedic Visit

Once we’ve made a specific diagnosis, we’ll tailor the treatment and management strategies to meet the needs of your child and your family.

In addition to medical care and specialist referrals, we provide emotional and psychological support to help families cope with and manage their child’s condition, as well as genetic counseling and therapy and rehabilitation services at duPont Hospital for Children.

If Your Child Needs Radiology Tests, Surgery, or Hospitalization

If your child needs medical imaging (radiology) tests, surgery, or an overnight hospital stay, we’ll refer you to duPont Hospital for Children or Nemours duPont Pediatrics at Bryn Mawr Hospital, where our pediatric orthopedists will help make your family’s experience as easy and stress-free as possible.

Main Line Health Center (where Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Newtown Square, is located) offers on-site laboratory, imaging, and pediatric rehabilitation services. The expertise of our pediatric specialists from Nemours is combined with the resources of Bryn Mawr Hospital (part of the Main Line Health system) to meet the health care needs of children in the Main Line communities.

Leading the Way: Nemours Long History With Pediatric Orthopedics

Nemours’ distinguished reputation didn’t happen overnight. We’ve been setting the standard for pediatric orthopedic care since 1940, when Alfred I. duPont’s philanthropic vision was first realized through the creation of the duPont Institute in Delaware — a place which, for 40 years, was devoted entirely to pediatric orthopedics and led by renowned physicians in the developing field.

Since then, the hospital has grown and so has our program. Yet its pioneering spirit remains. We’ve also further fulfilled the vision of Alfred I. duPont by expanding our geographic reach for orthopedics for kids through Nemours duPont Pediatrics locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as Nemours Children's Clinics in Florida. Together, we share a commitment to offering procedural and technological excellence, dedicated and compassionate care, and the latest in clinical research and training.

And in everything we do, we value your involvement as a key member of the care team. After all, who knows your child better than you? We want you and your family to be an active participant in the decision-making, care, and healing process.
