Nemours is one of the largest and most widely respected pediatric orthopedic practices in the United States — and the world. As an international leader in the field of orthopedics for kids, we provide comprehensive care for children with bone, joint, muscular, and nerve conditions.

The term “ortho” means to correct or straighten. At Nemours, our pediatric orthopedic teams recognize and treat neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions as early in your child’s life as possible. We’re here to help restore function and improve kids’ quality of life.
Since 1940, Nemours has been setting the standards for orthopedic procedures for children who were either born with bone, joint, muscular,
and nerve conditions, or who develop these conditions because of disease
or injury.
We welcome all kids with orthopedic problems — from skeletal dysplasia to bone tumors, limb length problems to scoliosis, spinal dysfunction to sports injuries — regardless of how simple or complex their condition (and their care) might be. Our goal is always to improve children’s quality of life — and help kids be kids, no matter what medical condition they’re dealing with.
Whatever pediatric orthopedic condition or injury your child might have, know that we offer comprehensive, compassionate care — and treat every child as we would our own.

The pediatric orthopedists at Nemours Children's Clinic, Pensacola, are experts in diagnosing and treating orthopedic conditions and injuries in children of all ages. In partnership with Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital, Nemours is the primary provider of pediatric specialty services in northwest Florida and south Alabama. We work together to provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment designed to improve function and well-being.
As pediatric orthopedists, we’re dedicated to the treatment of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions — and a large part of our mission is to recognize and treat these problems as early in your child’s life as possible. We welcome all kids with orthopedic problems, regardless of how simple or complex their condition (and their care) might be. Our goal is always to improve children’s quality of life — and help kids be kids, no matter what medical condition they face.
Our pediatric orthopedists and pediatric orthopedic teams treat children with all kinds of conditions and injuries related to the bones, joints, muscles, and nerves.
We have specialized expertise in:
- arthrogryposis: a condition, which develops before birth, of the joints and muscles that impairs a child's ability to use the shoulders, wrists, fingers, and lower extremities
- bone tumors: that may be benign/non-cancerous or malignant/cancerous, though benign tumors are more common
- cerebral palsy: a condition caused by abnormalities in the parts of the brain that control muscle movement
- congenital (present from birth clubfoot and other complex foot problems
- hand/upper extremities: surgery (treatment for disorders, deformities, or injuries involving the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder)
- limb length discrepancies and limb deformity: when children have limbs that are deformed or of unequal size
- management of complex fractures (broken bones, including growth plate fractures)
- muscular dystrophy: a genetic disease characterized by increasing weakness of the muscles
- osteogenesis imperfecta: also known as brittle bone disease, a genetic disorder in which bones break easily, often from little or no apparent cause
- residual effects of injuries or infections
- scoliosis: when a child's spine curves from side to side, like an "S" or a "C" and other spinal deformities
- spina bifida: a congenital condition that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings
Your first trip to any of our pediatric orthopedic centers is usually a comprehensive diagnostic visit. Allow 1 to 2 hours for this visit, which
may include:
- a thorough review of your child’s medical and family history
- a review of previous medical records and X-rays
- a detailed physical examination, including many measurements
- an assessment of range of joint motions and the relative length of the limb segments
Often, we can give you a specific diagnosis in this initial evaluation. But some conditions can take time to diagnose, so we may need to do further evaluation before we can pinpoint the problem.
Once we’ve made a specific diagnosis, we’ll tailor the treatment and management strategies to meet the needs of your child and your family.
In addition to medical care and specialist referrals, we’ll make sure your child gets emotional and psychological support to help cope with and manage the condition or injury. We’ll also arrange for genetic counseling and therapy, as well as rehabilitation services, if needed.
At Nemours Children’s Clinic, Pensacola, we offer diagnostic services in radiology (medical imaging). We can do plain X-rays and ultrasound studies on-site at our clinic, while CAT scans, MRIs, nuclear medicine studies, and interventional radiology are provided through our partner, Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.
If your child needs additional tests, surgery, or an overnight hospital stay, our pediatric orthopedic care team and other pediatric experts at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital will help make your family’s experience as easy and stress-free as possible.
Nemours’ distinguished reputation didn’t happen overnight. We’ve been setting the standard for pediatric orthopedic care since 1940, when Alfred I. duPont’s philanthropic vision was first realized through the creation of the duPont Institute in Delaware, a place which, for 40 years, was devoted entirely to pediatric orthopedics and led by renowned physicians in the developing field.
Since then, the hospital has grown and so has our program. Yet its pioneering spirit remains. We’ve also further fulfilled the vision of Alfred I. duPont by expanding our geographic reach for orthopedics for kids through Nemours Children’s Clinic locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as Jacksonville, Orange Park, and Pensacola in Florida. Together, we share a commitment to offering procedural and technological excellence, dedicated and compassionate care, and the latest in clinical research and training.
And in everything we do, we value your involvement as a key member of the care team. After all, who knows your child better than you? We want you and your family to be an active participant in the decision-making, care, and healing process.
