Areas of Orthopedic Expertise in Northwest Florida

We welcome all kids with orthopedic problems, regardless of how simple or complex their condition (and care) might be. Our goal is always to improve children’s quality of life — and help kids be kids, no matter what medical condition they face.

Pediatric Orthopedics Conditions We Treat

We treat children with all kinds of pediatric orthopedics conditions and injuries related to the bones, joints, muscles and nerves. Some of the children we see have extremely complex needs, including chronic medical conditions that require integrated care and assistive technology, like breathing machines.

Conditions we treat include:
  • arthrogryposis (a condition, which develops before birth, of the joints and muscles that impairs a child’s ability to use the shoulders, wrists, fingers, and lower extremities)
  • bone tumors (that may be benign/non-cancerous or malignant/cancerous, though benign tumors are more common)
  • cerebral palsy (a condition caused by abnormalities in the parts of the brain that control muscle movement)
  • congenital (present from birth) clubfoot and other complex foot problems
  • hand/upper extremities surgery (treatment for disorders, deformities, or injuries involving the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder)
  • limb length discrepancies and limb deformity (when children have
  • management of complex fractures (broken bones), including growth plate fractures
  • osteogenesis imperfecta (also known as brittle bone disease, a genetic disorder in which bones break easily, often from little or no apparent cause)
  • residual effects of injuries or infections
  • scoliosis (when a child’s spine curves from side to side, like an “S” or a “C”) and other spinal deformities
  • spina bifida (a congenital condition that involves the incomplete

Leading the Way: Our Long History With Pediatric Orthopedics

Nemours' distinguished reputation didn’t happen overnight. We've been setting the standard for pediatric orthopedic care since 1940, when Alfred I. duPont's philanthropic vision was first realized through the creation of the duPont Institute in Delaware — a place which, for 40 years, was devoted entirely to pediatric orthopedics and led by renowned pediatric orthopedists in the developing field.

Since then, the hospital has grown and so has our program. Yet our pioneering spirit remains. We’ve also further fulfilled the vision of Alfred I. duPont by expanding our geographic reach for pediatric orthopedics through Nemours duPont Pediatrics locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando and Nemours Children’s Specialty Care locations in Northwest Florida, Northeast Florida and Central Florida.

What to Expect

When you come to Nemours Children’s Clinic, Pensacola you get top-notch care from board-certified pediatric specialists who put families first — every time. This means we involve our patients and families every step of the way, and encourage you to ask questions and take part in your child’s treatment plan. What’s more, we’re with you throughout the entire journey, providing a whole complement of coping and supportive care, such as a family advisory council, social work services and more.

Your First Pediatric Orthopedics Visit

Your first trip to any of our pediatric orthopedics centers is usually a comprehensive diagnostic visit.

Allow one to two hours for this visit, which may include:
  • a thorough review of your child’s medical and family history
  • a review of previous medical records and X-rays
  • a detailed physical examination by a pediatric orthopedist, including many measurements
  • an assessment of range of joint motions and the relative length of the limb segments

Often, we can give you a specific diagnosis in this initial evaluation. But some conditions can take time to diagnose, so we may need to do further evaluation before we can pinpoint the problem.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment
  • photo ID
  • medical and pharmacy insurance cards
  • preferred pharmacy name and phone number
  • names and dosage of all medications, including over-the-counter medication, your child is currently taking
  • guardianship and custody papers, if a legal guardian rather than a parent accompanies your child

Please also bring hard copies or electronic copies of all imaging studies including X-rays, MRI or CT scans, if available.

Note: A parent or legal guardian must be with a child for a first visit.

After Your Pediatric Orthopedic Visit

Once we’ve made a specific diagnosis, we’ll tailor the treatment and management strategies to meet the needs of your child and your family.

In addition to medical care and specialist referrals, we provide emotional and psychological support to help families cope with and manage their child’s condition. We also offer genetic counseling services.

If Your Child Needs Tests, Surgery or a Hospital Stay

At Nemours Children’s Clinic, Pensacola we offer diagnostic services in radiology (medical imaging). We can do plain X-rays and ultrasound studies on-site at our clinic, while CT (“CAT”) scans, MRIs, nuclear medicine studies and interventional radiology services are provided through our partner, The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart.

If your child needs additional tests, surgery or an overnight hospital stay, our pediatric orthopedic care team and other pediatric experts at The Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart will help make your family’s experience as easy and stress-free as possible.
