Over the past few decades, the childhood obesity epidemic has made it more important than ever for children to be screened for risk factors of adult heart disease. Our Nemours pediatric preventive cardiology experts can evaluate and offer guidance for kids of all ages dealing with conditions that could put them at risk for heart problems, such as obesity and diabetes.

Children’s eating, exercising and lifestyle habits today can have a huge impact, positive and negative, on their health down the road. Pinpointing and addressing possible problems early on can keep kids from having big health issues (such as strokes, heart attacks and heart disease) as adults.

That’s where our Nemours preventive cardiology experts come in. We evaluate and offer guidance for kids of all ages dealing with conditions that could put them at risk for heart issues (especially atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries) including:

  • weight problems or obesity
  • high blood pressure (also called hypertension)
  • diabetes
  • high (elevated) cholesterol

Our experts can perform a complete cardiovascular risk evaluation and if your child is at risk, develop a personalized management plan that includes practical ways (like changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle) to reduce your child’s likelihood of future cardiovascular disease. And our preventive cardiologists work along with your child’s primary care doctor to help your child grow into a healthy adult.

At Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Bryn Mawr, we’re committed to keeping children healthy and helping them live long, disease-free lives. That’s why we focus on the prevention of heart problems that can occur in adults as a result of being overweight or obese — such as high blood pressure, increased cholesterol level, diabetes and coronary artery disease (narrowing of the blood vessels of the heart).

At every office visit, we measure height, weight and blood pressure to screen for obesity and hypertension. We may also order blood tests at your child’s visit to check for elevated cholesterol levels. Sometimes, these issues are inherited, so we’ll explore your child’s family history to understand your child’s risk and develop an individualized treatment plan for your child’s long-term health.

Specific pediatric preventive cardiology conditions we treat include:
  • hypercholesterolemia (increased cholesterol level in the blood)
  • elevated LDL (that’s the “bad cholesterol”)
  • elevated triglycerides (fats in the blood that store energy until the body needs it — too many triglycerides can clog blood vessels and cause health problems)
  • familial hypercholesterolemia (or “FH,” for short, a genetic condition that may run in families and can cause heart attacks at a young age)
  • high blood pressure (also known as, “hypertension”)

Our pediatric preventive cardiology experts at Nemours duPont Pediatrics, Bryn Mawr will formulate diet counseling and an appropriate exercise plan for your child, and devise a treatment plan that’s individualized for optimum success for your child’s specific needs. They may even consult with the diet and nutrition experts of our weight management program at our nearby Newtown Square office. Together, we’ll help and prepare you to put the recommendations into practice. Our physicians and other health professionals are all committed to improving and maintaining your child’s health and preventing future problems.

If your child needs further testing and/or treatment, we may refer you to the Nemours Cardiac Center in Wilmington.
