Psychology and Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who have advanced training and experience in psychotherapy and pharmacology. They evaluate children, prescribe medication as necessary, and evaluate the effects of these medications at regular intervals.

Clinical psychologists are health professionals with a doctorate degree (PhD, PsyD, or EdD) and advanced training in the clinical assessment and treatment of children, teens, and their families. These clinicians frequently conduct psychological research. Our psychologists may help to monitor the effects of medication but they do not prescribe medication.

At Nemours, our pediatric psychologists and psychiatrists work closely with other mental health professionals to evaluate and treat a wide range of psychiatric and psychological disorders, including autistic spectrum disorders, learning problems, and emotional and behavioral disorders in children up to age 18. A major emphasis of our work is enhancing the adjustment of children, adolescents, and families to serious or chronic medical conditions and alleviating any stress-related symptoms.

We provide care in a child-friendly environment that minimizes the stigma of mental health care treatment and recognizes the essential role of the family in a child’s emotional well-being.

We are also heavily involved in clinical, research, and educational activities related to child development and behavior, especially as they relate to medical illness.
