Nemours Pediatric Pulmonology Ranks Among the Best

U.S. News & World Report 2011-12 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals” ranks pediatric pulmonology care at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children among the best in the country.

Tuberculosis

Our skilled pulmonary doctors (pulmonologists) evaluate, diagnose, and treat children who react positively to the tuberculin skin test (also known as the PPD test). The skin test is performed by injecting a small amount of tuberculosis (TB) protein under the top layer of skin on the forearm. If your child has been infected with TB, the skin will react by producing a firm, red bump on the area within 48 hours. The diameter of the red bump will be measured to be certain the test is positive, and if the size meets the criteria, your child will need to receive further evaluation and treatment, including a chest X-ray and laboratory studies. Medications to treat tuberculosis infection will be prescribed, and your child will be monitored throughout the duration of treatment. Most TB can be treated through outpatient care. However, sometimes hospitalization may be required.
