Interventional Radiology

Pediatric interventional radiology — also known as image-guided therapy — involves the use of medical imaging techniques to guide our experts as they perform procedures to diagnose and treat vascular anomalies (problems with blood and lymph vessels) and developmental structural problems, and destroy tumors. If your child needs treatment for a tumor or a vascular anomaly, we may be able to address it using image-guided therapies within interventional radiology instead of/or complementary to traditional surgery.

At Nemours, we’re at the forefront of using minimally-invasive pediatric procedures — achieving the most effective treatments with the least invasive methods possible. In this way, we can help minimize your child’s discomfort, enhance healing and reduce the length of time in the hospital. These advanced techniques also help reduce risk and infection rates. Conditions that previously required open surgery can now be treated by Nemours pediatric interventional radiologists.

Interventional radiology is both a clinical and procedural branch of imaging. Our highly-trained team of experts uses image-guided techniques to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. You will be followed by a specialist in interventional radiology clinic both before and after the procedures depending on the underlying abnormality.

An imaging technique — typically ultrasound, CAT scan, or fluoroscopy — is used to produce a real-time image that helps precisely guide the pediatric interventional radiologist in performing a procedure such as:

  • inserting long IV lines (called PICCs, ports, dialysis catheters, and central lines)
  • draining an abscess (infection) in the abdomen or almost in any
    other area
  • placing a gastrostomy tube (feeding tube)
  • performing a biopsy (precisely sampling a tumor or organ),
  • treating vascular malformations and tumors including venous malformations, lymphatic
  • malformations, arteriovenous malformations and certain types of hemangiomas (abnormal build ups of blood vessels in the skin or internal organs)

We also use radiofrequency ablation and lasers to destroy tumors. Because the treatments are image-guided, they can be very precise, greatly reducing the chance of collateral damage to normal tissues, organs and skin.

Learn About Interventional Radiology

Our team of experts uses image-guidance — typically ultrasound, fluoroscopy or XperCT (Computerized Tomography) scan and 3D guidance — to diagnose and treat diseases and tumors throughout the body. XperCT allows for up to 80% radiation dose reduction of traditional CT and 3D guidance provides for precision that has helped revolutionize medical imaging.

Procedures performed include:
  • inserting long IV lines (called PICCs, ports, dialysis catheters, and central lines)
  • draining an abscess (infection) in the abdomen or almost in any
    other area
  • placing a gastrostomy tube (feeding tube)
  • performing a biopsy (precisely sampling a tumor or organ)
  • treating vascular malformations and vascular tumors including venous malformations, lymphatic malformations, arteriovenous malformations, and certain types of hemangiomas (abnormal buildups of blood vessels in the skin or internal organs)

We also use radiofrequency ablation and lasers to destroy tumors and treat diseases. Because the treatments are image-guided, they can be very precise, greatly reducing the chance of collateral damage to normal tissues, organs, and skin.

  • inserting balloon catheters and stents
  • destruction of tumors using direct chemicals including local chemotherapy, extreme cold with cryoablation, or radiofrequency ablation by heat

Other Advanced Pediatric Medical Imaging Services Available Onsite
In addition to pediatric interventional radiology, our unique imaging services include:
  • Central Florida’s only 256-slice Brilliance iCT Scanner: A CAT (Computed Axial Tomography) or CT scan is a painless test that uses a special doughnut-shaped X-ray machine to take pictures of a certain part of your child’s body. We are one of only a handful of children’s hospitals in the country to have this latest generation CAT (or CT) scanner. This machine scans faster than most CT scanners, producing excellent images in a much shorter time with much less radiation exposure for the child.
  • Neuroradiological, Cardiovascular, and Fetal MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Our subspecialty-trained pediatric radiologists are able see children with complex conditions who normally would have to travel out of state for this highly specialized imaging.

Our team of board-certified pediatric radiologists and pediatric radiologic technologists are experts in the safe medical imaging of children of every age, even newborns. We have also pledged our commitment to the “Image Gently” campaign of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, which is increasing awareness of the opportunities to promote radiation protection in the imaging of children.
